This device replaces one of the eyepieces on the microscope head and is used to center the phase contrast, dark field, or DIC discs in the slides or condenser. Common names include:
- auxiliary microscope
- telescope
- phase eyepiece

It is also often used to test the quality of microscope objectives, look for contamination, delamination, diaphragm condition, or adjust the Koehler illumination (observing the filament in a light bulb). It can be used with any microscope manufacturer as long as it uses eyepieces with a mounting diameter of 23.2 mm.
