This cover serves two main functions in the microscope:
- it protects the power supply and all electrical components built into the microscope base, protecting both the electrical system and the user from electric shock
- it protects the optical components located inside the microscope base from dust and other contamination
The base of Carl Zeiss Jena Jenaval, Jenalumar and similar microscopes contains part of the optical light path, and this area occasionally requires maintenance, especially cleaning. Since these microscopes are now more than 30 years old, it is not uncommon to find examples with this cover missing because it has been lost over the years.
