Side cover of the eyepiece prism for a Carl Zeiss Jena wide field (German: Grossfeld) binocular microscope head.
This is the component that is most often held by hand when adjusting the interpupillary distance. It is a rounded metal cover that protects the eyepiece prism located underneath.
The last photo in the gallery shows a complete microscope head. An arrow indicates exactly which component is being described and where it is located inside the head, making it easy to identify.
Carl Zeiss Jena wide field microscope heads (those designed for 30 mm eyepieces) have two such components (two prism covers). They protect the prisms of the right and left eyepieces. Both covers are identical and interchangeable, so there is no constructional difference between the right-hand and left-hand cover.
This is a component for a microscope head, not for a specific microscope model.
This component fits microscope heads designed for 30 mm eyepieces used, among others, in the following microscopes:
- Carl Zeiss Jena Jenamed
- Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalab
- Carl Zeiss Jena Jenaval
- Carl Zeiss Jena Jenatech
- Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar
- Carl Zeiss Jena Jenavert
Some Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalab and Jenamed microscopes (for example the Jenamed Fluorescence) were factory-equipped with binocular heads accepting 23.2 mm eyepieces. In that case this end cap is **not** compatible with that binocular head. By "that" I specifically mean the binocular head, as this is a component of the head rather than of the microscope itself.
Interestingly, 30 mm wide-field binocular heads are also occasionally fitted to older microscopes from the Mikroval series (for example Ergaval and Amplival). When combined with GF-Planachromat or GF-Planapochromat objectives (the latter also used on the Docuval), this provides arguably the best optical combination available for Carl Zeiss Jena microscopes with a 160 mm tube length.
The Carl Zeiss Jena wide-field binocular head for 30 mm eyepieces is mechanically the same device as the Baader Mark V binocular viewer used with astronomical telescopes. They are based on the same binocular head; the Baader Mark V differs only in having a modified mounting interface, astronomical eyepiece adapters and, in some versions, different external markings. Consequently, the component offered here is also compatible with the Baader Mark V binocular viewer.
Metal cast or injection-moulded components manufactured by Carl Zeiss Jena have their own part numbers. This component is marked with the number 2630 (full designation: Si10 2630 / Si10 CZ 2630). In addition, the number "1" or "2" appears next to the part number to indicate whether it is the cover for the right-hand or left-hand prism. This is the only difference, because mechanically the right-hand and left-hand covers are identical.
What is this part needed for?
- very often this cover is dented, cracked, chipped or broken (this is a well-known weakness of the silumin alloy), making replacement necessary.
