It's used to attach any head (mono, bino, trino, photo tube, etc.) to the microscope body.
This is a rather complex mechanism, consisting of a spring, moving plastic parts, and an opening handle. The spring can break or frequently get lost, plastic parts can break, and the main handle often breaks or bends during transport due to poor microscope protection.
