This cap covers and holds the spring, which is part of the fine (micro) advance mechanism.
The plate also contains the serial number, which begins with the year of manufacture (here, 76).
The markings placed immediately after the model name (here Y 4.2) mean:
Y 4.2: means a microscope or a microscope part adapted for operation in rooms with moderate humidity and within a temperature range of 10°C - 35°C.
T 4.2: means a microscope or a microscope part adapted for operation in rooms with extremely dry air or with high humidity in a tropical climate and within a temperature range of 10°C - 45°C.
Y 1.1: means a microscope or a microscope part adapted for operation in rooms with moderate humidity, but with the possibility of outdoor operation within a temperature range of -10°C - 40°C.
