Nikon states in its brochure that with objectives of 50x and above this 50 watt illuminator gives about 20 percent more light in the EPI reflected path and about 40 percent in the transmitted path than a 100W lamp. On top of that, a lamp of half the power runs considerably cooler.
Nikon made this light source in two versions (at Nikon they count as two separate models) differing solely in cable length. The LV-LH50PC model has a short cable, about 25 cm, because on LV series microscopes the power socket sits right next to the lamp housing. The MM-LH50PC model has a much longer cable, at least 80 cm, because on measuring microscopes the run to the socket is longer. Apart from that it is the same lamp, and the shorter cable is no obstacle - an ordinary extension lead will do. Such an optional extension lead is also needed when an external power supply is used. In some configurations, and likewise when the lamp is to feed an EPI illuminator mounted on a biological microscope, a separate external power supply is required.
