The Zeiss cable, part number 47 17 86 - 9901, connects the body of the Carl Zeiss ICM 405 inverted microscope to a camera equipped with a "Winder motor-drive" automatic film advance.
Important: this is the so-called "extended cable" intended for cameras with automatic film advance (the so-called Winder). The standard cable for cameras without a Winder carries the Zeiss part number 47 17 84 - 0000 (or, in later revisions, with the suffix -9901).
This cable connects the dedicated electrical system connector located at the lower front of the Zeiss ICM 405 inverted microscope body to the camera control socket. It carries the shutter release signal from the microscope's side control panel as well as the return signals from the automatic exposure system and the exposure meter (integrated with the ASA/DIN slider, P/N 47 17 71). Unlike the standard version, this model of cable contains additional signal lines. After an exposure, it sends a control pulse to the camera's motor-drive (Winder), causing the film to advance automatically to the next frame without the microscope user having to touch the camera.
In the last photograph in the gallery, an arrow indicates the connector on the Carl Zeiss ICM 405 microscope into which this cable is plugged.
Important: the connector on the front of the Zeiss ICM 405 is not a standard PC Sync connector (used for ordinary flash units), but a proprietary multi-pin Zeiss system connector.
