This is description of this part:

The eyepiece mounting tube has a diameter of 23.2 mm. The tube has a slot for use with POL polarizing eyepieces (including measuring and DIC/DIK). The tube is universal ? there is no difference between right and left lenses.

It has a pin on the bottom for operating the interpupillary distance adjustment mechanism.

What is this part needed for?

Very often, this tube is dented and the eyepiece cannot be inserted into it.
If you have a different head with identical tubes but without support for Pol / DIC / DIK eyepieces and want to replace them
