This is description of this part:
Cap cover for the EPI reflected-light illuminator—most commonly a fluorescence illuminator—for Zeiss Universal and Photomicroscope (Phomi) microscopes.
This is a round plastic cap with a metal insert, designed to cover the output port of the EPI illuminator. It is removed when an EPI fluorescence illuminator turret is installed (for example, on the Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS).
Please note that some versions of the Zeiss Universal microscope do not have an EPI reflected-light illuminator port.
The accompanying video, using a Zeiss Photomicroscope II as an example, shows exactly where this cap is located on the microscope and how it is installed and removed.
On the secondary market, many Zeiss Phomi (Photomicroscope) and Zeiss Universal microscopes are missing this cap. As a result, dust can enter the illumination system (in other words, the light path). Why is this cap often missing?
- first, it can be removed very easily, so over the years it may simply get lost
- secondly, the microscope body and the EPI fluorescence illuminator turret are often sold separately, so after the turret has been removed, the EPI illuminator port remains uncovered
What is this part needed for?
- if you have a microscope with EPI illumination but are missing the original cap
