Nikon Optiphot / Labophot microscope Hg 100W / HBO fluorescence illuminator spherical rear reflector mirror

The name of this microscope part.

Nikon Optiphot / Labophot microscope Hg 100W / HBO fluorescence illuminator spherical rear reflector mirror

Description of this part for the microscope.

Replacement part for an HBO / Hg 100W fluorescence illuminator used with Nikon Optiphot microscopes and other microscope models equipped with an illuminator of the same ...

mechanical design.

This is the spherical rear reflector mounted inside the fluorescence illuminator behind the lamp. Its function is to collect and reflect the light that is emitted backwards and would otherwise be lost, directing it towards the collimating lens.

This particular reflector was removed from a fluorescence illuminator used on a Nikon Optiphot microscope. Hg 100W / HBO 100W illuminators of this type, or mechanically identical versions using the same rear reflector, were fitted to, among others:
- Nikon Optiphot
- Nikon Labophot
- Nikon Microphot

Therefore, the reflector presented here is also compatible with these microscopes. However, it should primarily be regarded as a replacement part for the fluorescence illuminator rather than for a specific microscope model.

When may the rear reflector need to be replaced?
- High-pressure fluorescence lamps used as the light source in these illuminators may explode, damaging the rear reflector and often the collimating lens as well.
- In addition, because the reflector is located immediately next to the light source, it is exposed to very high temperatures and is therefore susceptible to thermal damage.
- Another common issue is oxidation of the reflective surface over the course of decades. When this happens, the reflector loses its optical performance and the entire illuminator produces significantly less light.

Important: Nikon EPI fluorescence illuminators of that period were manufactured in several different lamp house versions. They are most commonly referred to simply as:
- Nikon Hg 100W
- Nikon HBO 100W
- Nikon HBO 100W HG Lamp House
- often the model is Nikon LH-M100CB-1

For confirmation of compatibility, the photo gallery includes precise dimensions of this component. The last photograph also shows the complete illuminator from which this reflector was removed, allowing compatibility to be verified with confidence.
