Lomo MIN-8 polarizing microscope widefield condenser lens | light beam-collimating lens

The name of this microscope part.

Lomo MIN-8 polarizing microscope widefield condenser lens | light beam-collimating lens

Description of this part for the microscope.

The Lomo MIN-8 polarizing microscope is based on the MBB-1A biological microscope, however there are several differences between these two models.

One of the ...

differences between the Lomo MIN-8 and MBB-1A microscopes is the position of the light beam collimating lens:
- in the Lomo MBB-1A microscope this lens is normally located below the Abbe condenser
- in the Lomo MIN-8 microscope this lens is located in the base, in the light path directly behind the field diaphragm

Here I present and offer the complete mechanism for mounting and moving this lens:
- lens in housing
- rod on which the lens is mounted
- holder allowing movement of the lens
- mounting screws

This lens is used to shape the light beam so that the specimen is evenly illuminated at low magnifications.

A0,3 top lens for Lomo OI-14 oblique light DIC-like microscope condenser

The name of this microscope part.

A0,3 top lens for Lomo OI-14 oblique light DIC-like microscope condenser

Description of this part for the microscope.

Top lens with low numerical aperture A 0.3 for the Lomo OI-14 oblique light condenser.

Note: the designation OI-14 is written in the Latin alphabet. ...

On the condenser, the model name is written in Cyrillic and looks similar to ON-14.

The Lomo OI-14 condenser has a removable (unscrewable) top lens:
- A1.4 with high aperture, for use with objectives with high numerical aperture (which corresponds to high magnifications, it can be assumed above 40x)
- A0.3 with low aperture, for use with low magnification objectives

Although it is possible to work with low magnification objectives (e.g. 5x or 10x) using a condenser with the A1.4 lens installed - the image is too "sharp" and contrasty. In this case, replacing the lens with A0.3 allows obtaining a pastel, soft and visually pleasant image.

Since the Lomo OI-14 condenser has been produced since the 1960s, over the years this additional lens has very often been lost and most condensers available on the secondary market have only one - most often A1.4.

The Lomo OI-14 condenser has a mounting diameter of 37 mm, but since it is very popular among microscope users, an extension ring is often used, allowing it to be mounted in microscopes with a 39.5 mm condenser holder. This condenser fits microscopes from various manufacturers: Lomo, PZO, Zeiss, Carl Zeiss Jena, Meopta, IOR, Olympus, ROW, Nikon, Leitz Wetzlar and many others.

Wild M420 / Leica M420 Makroskop - central lens for macroscope trinocular photo head

The name of this microscope part.

Wild M420 / Leica M420 Makroskop - central lens for macroscope trinocular photo head

Description of this part for the microscope.

Central lens for the trinocular head of the Wild Heerbrugg M420 Makroskop (macroscope) (Leica M420).

In the photos showing the complete head, an arrow indicates ...

which element it is and where it is located in the head, in order to clearly identify this part.

Due to the similar design, it is very likely that this component will also fit the photographic trinocular head of the following macroscope models:
- Wild M400
- Wild M450 (another name: Leica M450)

The macroscope is an advanced stereoscopic microscope with a high-resolution ZOOM objective.

Why are dual names Wild and Leica used? The M400 macroscope was manufactured by Wild Heerbrugg (Switzerland). Later, the Wild company was acquired by Leica and the M420 and M450 models may be labeled either Wild M420 / Wild M450 or Leica M420 / Leica M450. Note: this is different for the Wild M400 model - it does not have a Leica equivalent, because "Leica M400" is a model of a surgical microscope.

Leitz Dialux 20 microscope - light collector lens and filter holder

The name of this microscope part.

Leitz Dialux 20 microscope - light collector lens and filter holder

Description of this part for the microscope.

Collector lens for illumination in the Leitz Wetzlar Dialux 20 microscope. The lens is housed in a plastic mount which also serves as a filter holder.

This lens ...

is part of the component shown in the Leitz Dialux 20 microscope manual under number 18, which corresponds to the field diaphragm assembly. This page from the manual can be found in the image gallery.

The field diaphragm of the Leitz Dialux 20 microscope consists of:
- lens
- iris diaphragm
and is screwed to the microscope base (stativ foot) directly below the condenser.
The item offered here is exactly this lens.

This lens performs several functions:
- it collimates the light beam
- it protects the iris diaphragm from contamination
- it also serves as a filter holder for inserting filters

It is worth noting that this element may also be compatible with many other Leitz Wetzlar microscope models.

Nikon Optiphot / Labophot microscope Hg 100W / HBO fluorescence illuminator collector lens with heat absorbing filter

The name of this microscope part.

Nikon Optiphot / Labophot microscope Hg 100W / HBO fluorescence illuminator collector lens with heat absorbing filter

Description of this part for the microscope.

Replacement optical component for the HBO / Hg 100W fluorescence illuminator used with Nikon Optiphot microscopes and other microscope models equipped with this type of ...

lamp house.

This is the illumination collector lens combined with a heat absorbing filter that absorbs the heat generated by the light source (mercury arc lamp).

This particular collector lens and heat absorbing filter assembly was installed in a fluorescence illuminator used on a Nikon Optiphot microscope. Hg 100W / HBO 100W illuminators, or similar models with the same mechanical design and identical optics, were used in, among others, the following microscopes:
- Nikon Optiphot
- Nikon Labophot
- Nikon Microphot

Therefore, the optical module offered here is also compatible with these microscopes. First and foremost, it is a replacement part for repairing the illuminator rather than a specific microscope.

When may it become necessary to replace the heat absorbing filter or the collector lens that collimates the light beam?
- the high-pressure mercury arc lamps used as the light source in these illuminators may explode, damaging the rear reflector and often also the collimator lens.
- in addition, the collector lens located immediately next to the light source is particularly susceptible to damage due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
- another very common failure is that the filter simply cracks because of mechanical damage (although it is mounted without mechanical stress—it is intentionally fitted with slight clearance).

Important: Nikon EPI fluorescence illuminators from that period were manufactured with several different lamp house designs. They are most commonly referred to simply as:
- Nikon Hg 100W
- Nikon HBO 100W
- Nikon HBO 100W HG Lamp House
- often the model is Nikon LH-M100CB-1

For verification, the photo gallery includes precise dimensions of this microscope part. The last photograph also shows the complete illuminator from which this microscope part was removed, allowing compatibility to be confirmed with certainty.

The name of this microscope part.

Zeiss Standard GFL / WL microscope condenser wide field lens

Description of this part for the microscope.

Swing-out wide field lens mounted in the condenser holder of Carl Zeiss Standard series microscopes.

The wide field lens provides even illumination across the ...

entire specimen when using low-magnification objectives. In Carl Zeiss Standard series microscopes it is mounted in a pivoting holder located within the condenser holder assembly.

This particular holder complete with the wide field lens was removed from a Zeiss Standard GFL microscope, but it also fits condenser holders used, among others, in the following microscopes:
- Zeiss Standard 14
- Zeiss Standard 16
- Zeiss Standard 18
- Zeiss Standard WL / WL 89

The lens can be removed from its holder (as shown in the accompanying video) and used for other DIY projects. The very fact that it is removable (and sometimes even falls out by itself) is the reason why it is missing from many used microscopes. The component offered here is intended to solve exactly this problem.

The name of this microscope part.

Optical N-117M / Brunel microscope collector lens with frosted diffuser and filter holder | BestScope BS-2020 and Delta Optical Genetic Pro compatible

Description of this part for the microscope.

Light collector lens with a frosted filter (diffuser) for microscopes based on the N-117M / DN-117M models. The lens is mounted in a plastic housing, which also serves ...

as a filter holder.

Mechanically, this lens in its housing is located in the microscope base, underneath the condenser. It is screwed into the base (the housing is threaded), while the light source (halogen or LED) is located directly below this collector.

The N-117M / DN-117M microscope is a fairly good laboratory microscope manufactured at the Chinese NYO factory and sold worldwide under various names. These microscopes are known and sold, among others, as:
- Delta Optical Genetic Pro (mainly in Poland)
- AmScope B340 / T340 (mainly in the USA and the rest of the world through Amazon)
- Labtron LEM-C10 / C11 / C12 (mainly in the UK)

- Biocare DN-117M (mainly in Peru)
- Viresa N-117M (mainly in Mexico)
- Eurolab DN-117M
- Nexcope N-117M
- Novel N-117M

This is certainly not a complete list – many sellers give the microscopes they sell their own names (just like Delta Optical in Poland). The best way to check whether this microscope part fits your microscope is to compare the appearance of your microscope with the microscope from which this microscope part was removed (https://www.microscopeparts.eu/microscope/optical-n-117m-388).

The N-117M model has a binocular or trinocular head, while the DN-117M model has a built-in digital USB camera (hence the “D” at the beginning of the name, for “Digital”). However, the microscope body is identical – regardless of whether a halogen bulb or LED is used for illumination. Therefore, this collector lens is also the same in all these models.

This microscope part performs several functions:
- it collimates the light beam
- the built-in frosted glass diffuser provides uniform illumination, preventing discoloration in the area of the filament
- it also serves as the holder for round filters

The last photos in the gallery show the entire N-117M type microscope, with an arrow indicating which microscope part is being described and where it is located. This helps prevent any confusion when identifying the microscope part.

Description of this part for the microscope.

Telan intermediate lens for the stand of microscopes based on the N-117M / DN-117M models.

This lens has a metal housing with a thread at the bottom. ...

Mechanically, it is located inside the microscope head mounting bracket and is screwed into the objective nosepiece from above, so it also serves as the mounting for the objective nosepiece.

The N-117M / DN-117M microscope is a fairly good laboratory microscope manufactured at the Chinese NYO factory and sold worldwide under various names. These microscopes are known and sold, among others, as:

The N-117M model has a binocular or trinocular head, while the DN-117M model has a built-in digital USB camera (hence the “D” at the beginning of the name, for “Digital”) – but the stand is shared by both models, so this Telan lens fits both models.

Microscopes based on the N-117M model have an objective nosepiece tilted inward, and in my opinion this is why a Telan lens is required even though this is a microscope using optics corrected for a 160 mm tube length.

Other names are sometimes used for the Telan lens installed in the microscope, for example:
- nosepiece lens
- intermediate lens
- tube lens (although this is an incorrect term, because a really “Tube lens” has a different function)
