Carl Zeiss Jena Ergaval / Amplival - frosted filter for microscope light with handle | ground glass
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
This is a service part for repairing the microscope base.
In the base of the Carl Zeiss Jena Ergaval / Amplival microscopes (including their variants),
...
a glass frosted filter (so-called ground glass) is located in the optical light beam path. It is mounted on a steel rod ending with a handle positioned outside the microscope base - at the rear, next to the place where the illuminator is inserted. This handle is used to insert and withdraw the frosted filter from the illumination beam path.
This design often leads to damage: - the glass frosted filter is mounted on the rod in such a way that the glass frequently cracks - the handle located at the rear of the microscope base very often breaks or crumbles - the metal rod often jams and as a result of attempts to move it - bends
Here I present and offer this exact frosted filter with the complete movement mechanism: - glass frosted filter (ground glass) - holder for mounting the filter to the rod - all necessary screws to attach this set to the microscope base - plastic control knob for operating the ground glass

Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval-2 / Laboval FL microscope fluorescence filter cube 450nm
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
450 nm fluorescence filter cube for Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval-2 and Laboval Fluoreszenz fluorescence microscopes.
This filter cube, sometimes also called a
...
reflector, performs two functions: - it contains a barrier filter (emission filter) for the 450 nm wavelength - it acts as an angular mirror, reflecting the light beam from the EPI fluorescence illuminator vertically downward through the objective toward the specimen.
This fluorescence filter cube fits the following EPI fluorescence microscopes: - Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval Fluoreszenz - Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval-2 (built on the Carl Zeiss Jena Amplival microscope platform)
Important - this microscope component does not fit the first version of the Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval microscope. The Fluoval microscope (without "2") does not use a filter cube. Instead, it has a simple permanently mounted swing-out barrier filter.
The filter cube has two positions: - empty, for normal transmitted-light operation - 450 nm for reflected-light fluorescence (EPI) operation
Mechanically, this filter cube is installed between the objective nosepiece and the microscope head. It slides into a dedicated slot and moves along a dovetail guide. On the Carl Zeiss Jena Laboval Fluoreszenz microscope, this slot is located in the additional upper horizontal arm of the EPI fluorescence illuminator. On the Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval-2 microscope, the slot is located in the EPI fluorescence arm, which is an integral part of the microscope. The Fluoval-2 is based on the Carl Zeiss Jena Amplival microscope, which has a modular design. Mechanically, the Fluoval-2 is essentially an Amplival equipped with an upper EPI fluorescence arm.
Sliding the cube along this dovetail guide switches between the empty position (transmitted light) and EPI fluorescence with the 450 nm filter.

Carl Zeiss Jena KP425 microscope filter 32mm fluorescence excitation
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
Professional Carl Zeiss Jena KP425 interference filter, 32 mm in diameter, intended for fluorescence microscopy.
Basic parameters of this filter: Manufacturer:
...
Carl Zeiss Jena Model: KP425 Type: interference excitation filter for fluorescence Diameter: 32 mm Mirror coating: yes
Filters 32 mm in diameter can be used in most microscopes from many manufacturers. In Carl Zeiss Jena microscopes they can be used, among others, in the following fluorescence microscopes: - Carl Zeiss Jena Jenamed Fluorescence (Fluoreszenz) - Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar - Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval - Carl Zeiss Jena Laboval Fluorescence
Note - because this is an interference filter (it has a mirrored surface), the angle at which the filter sits relative to the incoming light matters and affects its parameters.
The coating on interference filters is sensitive not only to mechanical damage, for example scratches from improper storage or cleaning. Several decades of work right next to the HBO lamp can cloud it or make it delaminate, which shows as patches or rainbow islands that do not disappear when you rotate it. In that case the best solution is to replace the filter with one like the one I offer here.

The letter "g" at the end of the designation is short for the German gehärtet, meaning toughened - the manufacturer gave it to filters meant to work right next to high-power lamps, especially HBO mercury burners, where ordinary glass does not withstand the high temperature.
Filters 32 mm in diameter can be used in most microscopes from many manufacturers. In Carl Zeiss Jena microscopes they can be used, among others, in the following fluorescence microscopes: - Carl Zeiss Jena Jenamed Fluorescence (Fluoreszenz) - Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar - Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval / Fluoval-2 - Carl Zeiss Jena Laboval Fluorescence
In the excitation path this filter does not work on its own. It is added to the main filter to cut off the red passed by that filter and to narrow the excitation band further.

Carl Zeiss Jena U204g microscope UV excitation filter 32mm fluorescence
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
Professional glass filter Carl Zeiss Jena U204g, 32 mm in diameter, intended for fluorescence excitation with ultraviolet radiation.
Basic parameters of this
...
filter: Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss Jena Model: U204g Filter type: glass excitation filter for UV fluorescence (the manufacturer calls it Erregerfilter) Glass type: UG 1 Diameter: 32 mm Thickness: 2 mm Colour: black-violet, passes very little visible light Toughened version: yes
The g at the end of the designation stands for the German gehärtet, meaning toughened. The manufacturer gave it to filters meant to work right next to high-power lamps, especially HBO mercury burners, where ordinary glass does not withstand the high temperature. With a UV excitation filter this matters especially, because it sits at the hottest point of the whole path and absorbs most of the burner energy.
The manufacturer catalogue gives the following transmission values for this glass at 2 mm thickness: - 0.015 at 302 nm - 0.093 at 312 nm - 0.435 at 334 nm - 0.644 at 366 nm
Across the whole visible range, from 405 to 644 nm, transmission is zero. This means the filter works almost entirely on the 366 nm mercury line, exactly where the HBO burner is strongest in the ultraviolet.
One property of this glass is worth knowing: above 700 nm it starts to transmit again, and at 750 nm transmission reaches 0.210. This infrared leak is invisible to the eye, but it heats the specimen and spoils contrast in photographs.
In the excitation path U204 is also combined with a red-absorbing filter. The manufacturer documentation shows such a pair with the B226 filter, which cleans up the excitation band further.
The same UG 1 glass was supplied in two thicknesses, each with its own designation: - The Carl Zeiss Jena U204 filter is UG 1 glass 2 mm thick - The Carl Zeiss Jena U205 filter is UG 1 glass 4 mm thick
The thicker U205 cuts more sharply, but passes about a third less energy on the 366 nm line, so the image is noticeably darker.
A safety note: this filter passes ultraviolet, which is invisible and harmful to the eyes. When working with it, never look into the illumination path without a barrier filter in place.
