Zeiss Photomicroscope / Universal EPI (fluorescence) reflected light lamp house side mount with angle mirror prism

The name of this microscope part.

Zeiss Photomicroscope / Universal EPI (fluorescence) reflected light lamp house side mount with angle mirror prism

Description of this part for the microscope.

Side lamp house mount for EPI reflected light illumination used with Zeiss Photomicroscope and Universal microscopes.

This mount allows an additional external ...

light source to be connected. The lamp house is installed on the left side of the microscope, while the built-in mirror prism redirects the light beam into the EPI nosepiece.

Fluorescence light sources are most commonly connected to this mount, but it is completely universal. It contains no filters and can be used with LED, HBO, XBO, halogen or even classic incandescent lamp houses.

If the light source is lightweight (one of the newer models), it can be mounted without any additional supports. If a large, heavy lamp house is used, additional support frames are often employed to carry its weight (these are optional accessories and are not included).

In its current configuration, this mount accepts lamp houses with a 48 mm connection diameter. However, this mounting adapter can be removed, leaving a plain tube that can accept virtually any adapter, allowing almost any manufacturer's light source to be connected.

The last photograph in the gallery shows a Zeiss Photomicroscope III microscope with this lamp house mount installed. An arrow indicates its exact location, making it easy to identify this component.

The video gallery also contains two videos. The first presents this component from different angles and in close-up. The second demonstrates how to remove this EPI lamp house mount using a Zeiss Photomicroscope III microscope (commonly known as the Zeiss Phomi III) as an example.

Zeiss Photomicroscope / Universal microscope light collector with matte filter | holder with frosted ground glass for 6V 15W illuminator lamp

The name of this microscope part.

Zeiss Photomicroscope / Universal microscope light collector with matte filter | holder with frosted ground glass for 6V 15W illuminator lamp

Description of this part for the microscope.

Illuminator holder with a light-collimating lens and frosted ground glass for Carl Zeiss Standard microscopes.

This microscope component is located inside the ...

microscope base. It transfers the light beam from the illuminator, homogenises it (the image of the filament is diffused by means of a diffuser), and then properly collimates it using a collimating lens. The prepared light beam is then directed to the deflecting mirror (this is a separate microscope component).

This is part of the transmitted-light optical path. The diffuser (frosted ground glass) and the collimating lens are housed inside a metal enclosure that serves as a heat sink for the halogen lamp. The complete assembly forms the illuminator housing.

This particular collector with frosted ground glass was removed from a Carl Zeiss Photomicroscope (also known as Zeiss PM / Zeiss Phomi).
It fits the following microscopes (this is not a complete list):
- Zeiss Photomicroscope (Zeiss PM / Phomi)
- Zeiss Photomicroscope II (Zeiss PM2 / Phomi II)
- Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS (Zeiss PM3 RS / Phomi III)
- Zeiss Universal
- Zeiss Ultraphot
- most likely also Zeiss Standard 16 / 18 / WL / WL 89 / GFL microscopes

VERY IMPORTANT: This component is intended for the 6V 15W incandescent illuminator. Zeiss microscopes may be equipped either with a 6V 15W incandescent illuminator (a tubular illuminator inserted into the microscope base) or with an external halogen Lampenhaus mounted to the rear of the microscope base. Microscope versions equipped with a halogen illuminator use a different illuminator holder than the one presented here.

Other names used for this component:
- illuminator holder with frosted filter
- illuminator tube
- illuminator holder with frosted ground glass
- sometimes the foreign-language term "Lampenhaus" is also used, although it is not a precise name for this component

The last photographs in the gallery show the base of a Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS. Arrows indicate exactly which component is being offered and where it is located inside the microscope base, making it possible to identify this component unambiguously.

Zeiss Photomicroscope II / Universal microscope 60W illuminator with lamp housing

The name of this microscope part.

Zeiss Photomicroscope II / Universal microscope 60W illuminator with lamp housing

Description of this part for the microscope.

60-watt microscope illuminator for Carl Zeiss (Oberkochen, West Germany) Standard series microscopes.

The basic versions of Carl Zeiss Standard series microscopes ...

are equipped with a base illuminator using a 6 V 15 W lamp. This can be replaced with:
a) a large 60-watt illuminator using a 12 V 60 W lamp
b) a halogen illuminator

This listing presents the illuminator described in option a), namely the 60 W incandescent lamp version.

Basic specifications of this illuminator:
Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss (Oberkochen, West Germany)
Model: 60-watt illuminator
Lamp voltage: 12 V
Lamp house mounting method: circular dovetail
Cooling: passive. The entire large lamp house also serves as a heat sink, dissipating the heat generated by the 60-watt lamp
Lamp socket centering screws: yes, the lamp socket is equipped with centering screws
Diffuser: yes, inside the lamp house, in front of the lamp condenser lens (the so-called illumination collector), there is a matte diffuser mounted in a flip-out holder

This particular unit was removed from a Carl Zeiss Photomicroscope II. However, it is compatible with most microscopes of the Zeiss Standard series.

This illuminator fits the following microscopes:
- Zeiss Standard 16 / GFL
- Zeiss Standard WL / WL 89
- Zeiss Universal
- Zeiss Photomicroscope
- Zeiss Photomicroscope II
- Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS
- and also the Zeiss IM 35 / ICM 405 inverted microscope

The following is a quotation from the Zeiss Photomicroscope II instruction manual:

60-watt illuminator

Instead of the 6-v. 15-w base illuminator, the 60-watt illuminator may be firmly connected to the microscope stand. For this purpose, the collector tube with lamp condenser, 46 70 50, must be removed after unscrewing the bottom plate and replaced by the connecting tube, 46 70 41 (Fig. 15). The 60-watt illuminator is mounted in the usual manner with the aid of a dovetail ring, like a body tube, for example.

The variable transformer is identical to the one for the base illuminator and supplies voltages from 0 ... 20 volts. When this equipment is used, the red scale of the voltmeter applies.

Several important points should be mentioned:
- if your microscope is currently equipped with the standard 6 V 15 W illumination system, the illuminator mounting adapter must also be replaced (this is described in the instruction manual quoted above)
- the lamp house of this illuminator is finished in grey. Some Carl Zeiss Standard series microscopes have black, cream or hammered-finish housings. This illuminator is mechanically compatible with those models, although the colour may not be an aesthetically perfect match
- power supplies with a rated output of exactly 60 W are virtually unavailable on the second-hand market. In practice, 12 V 100 W power supplies are used to operate this light source
- please note that exactly the same (!) illuminator is also used on the Zeiss IM 35 / ICM 405 inverted microscopes. Please also refer to the description of illuminator No. 00697 in this database. YES – these are exactly the same illuminators. However, that particular unit was removed from an inverted microscope and therefore has its own separate description. You will also find additional photographs there. In the Zeiss IM 35 instruction manual, the lamp socket is referred to as "Lamp socket 60 P/N 46 80 15", while the lamp house is referred to as "Lamp housing with lamp condenser P/N 46 72 27"
- this illuminator can be used for both transmitted-light and reflected-light (EPI) illumination
- if you would like to manufacture your own DIY illuminator mounting adapter because you do not have the original Zeiss part (P/N 46 70 41), the following information may be useful: the circular dovetail on this illuminator has a diameter of 43 mm, which is the same as on many microscope condensers and mono-, binocular and trinocular microscope heads. This means that, for example, a microscope head mounting adapter can be used as the basis for manufacturing a custom DIY illuminator adapter

Important: The photographs show a lamp installed in the lamp socket. This lamp DOES NOT LIGHT because it is burned out. It is shown only so that you can see which lamp model is used in this illuminator.
