- the adapter allows centering the objective relative to the optical axis, which is extremely important in polarization

Interesting fact:
This adapter fits the Carl Zeiss Jena Polmi-A microscope. This microscope is a construction designed for work with objectives with RMS thread and a tube length of 160 mm, but after using this adapter it is possible to use objectives with M19 thread corrected for infinity. Such tests were performed by Mr. Wojciech Plonka and he found that it works, but in this case the objectives produce stronger magnification than nominal (link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/254539018060854/?multi_permalinks=1857582481089825).

Note regarding the manufacturer's name: Carl Zeiss West Germany marketed its OPMI surgical microscopes (and their accessories) under the following names:
- Zeiss OPMI
- Opton OPMI
These are the same microscopes and the same components.
When the name "Opton" appears, it is printed on the label, while the word "Zeiss" underneath has often been washed off, worn away or scraped off at the factory. The reason for the deliberate removal of the "Zeiss" name and the use of the "Opton" name was an agreement with Carl Zeiss Jena, which operated in the former Eastern Bloc (communist bloc), to avoid using the name "Zeiss" on export products.

This camera mount was removed from a Carl Zeiss ICM 405 microscope, but it fits any microscope with a compatible mounting interface. It originally had an analog Zeiss M35 camera mounted in it.

The Carl Zeiss ICM 405 inverted microscope is an advanced version of the Carl Zeiss IM 35 inverted microscope. The main differences between the ICM 405 and the IM 35 are the ICM 405's more advanced microphotography capabilities.

Mechanically, this photo tube is mounted inside the microscope body, below the microscope head mount. It splits the light beam (image) travelling through the microscope head and eyepieces to the user's eyes. Part of the light beam is directed to the universal photo output.

This photo tube was removed from a Carl Zeiss ICM 405 microscope. However, it is a completely universal light-splitting tube, so with suitable DIY mounts it can be used in practically any microscope or other optical device (astronomical telescope, binoculars, spotting scope, spectrophotometer, etc.). The universal interface for connecting an image-recording device (a straight tube with a 35 mm inner diameter) allows, among other things, the use of digital cameras or DSLR cameras (with suitable adapters). Since the light beam is split, this output can be used for “simul-focal live” observation, meaning that in real time the same image can be seen simultaneously through the microscope eyepieces and by the camera.
