Note - This part is from the PZO MB-30 microscope, so it has long screws for centering the condenser. It differs from the condenser holders of the MS and ML models in these screws; i.e., the MS and ML do not have such long screws for centering the condenser. Users of PZO MS and PZO ML series microscopes often replace their condenser holder with the one in the MB-30 to easily center the condenser, which is especially convenient when using the condenser for phase contrast.

Zeiss Axioskop 20 microscope manual this element can be seen in figure 4.1. In the manual, this holder is shown together with the rack, which is not part of the item offered here.

The element shown and offered here consists of:

Important: although this condenser holder was removed from a Zeiss Axioskop 20 microscope, its individual components (e.g. centering screws) will most likely fit condenser holders from other Zeiss Axio models.

This component fits various versions of the Leitz Wetzlar SM microscope:
- Leitz SM
- Leitz SM-D
- Leitz SM-Pol

- clamping mechanism that secures the entire module to the dovetail guide in the microscope body
- focusing knob for moving the condenser vertically
- toothed rack (often incorrectly referred to as a gear)
- note the round opening near the dovetail mounting point – it provides a passage for the light beam leading to an optional EPI illuminator

Any of the components listed above may become damaged during the lifetime of the microscope. In such cases, either the damaged component or the complete condenser holder assembly must be replaced.

The purpose of this microscope part is to hold the microscope condenser and allow it to move vertically.
The module is attached with a clamping screw (the so-called "quick-release clamp") to the vertical dovetail guide in the microscope body. The microscope stage holder is mounted on the same guide, above this module.

This holder accepts condensers with a dovetail mount – it is not intended for condensers with a diameter of 37 mm or 39.5 mm.

Carl Zeiss Jena Ergaval microscopes were originally equipped with a condenser attached to the "MO" holder. This holder has a permanently mounted iris diaphragm and wide-field lens, while the condenser itself is screwed into the upper thread. In this configuration, the condenser cannot be exchanged.
The Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval uses a similar arrangement, whereas the Carl Zeiss Jena Amplival was originally equipped with a panchromatic condenser.

If the user wishes to use other condensers (including those made by manufacturers other than Carl Zeiss Jena), the original condenser holder must be replaced with the MZ condenser holder. Once this has been done, any microscope condenser with a mounting diameter of 39.5 mm can be installed. Condensers with a 37 mm mounting diameter can also be used if they are fitted with a suitable adapter ring.

This is exactly such a holder for interchangeable condensers.

This is certainly not a complete list of names – many sellers give the microscopes they sell their own names without a model number (just like Delta Optical in Poland). The best way to check whether this microscope part fits your microscope is to compare the appearance of your microscope with the microscope from which this condenser holder was removed (https://www.microscopeparts.eu/microscope/optical-n-117m-388).

The N-117M model has a binocular or trinocular head, while the DN-117M model has a built-in digital USB camera (hence the “D” at the beginning of the name, for “Digital”) – but the stand is shared by both models, so this condenser holder fits both models.

When might this microscope part need to be replaced?
- if the microscope has a condenser holder in which the clamping screw is missing, bent, or broken off with a fragment remaining in the thread. This is a common fault
- if the clamp is missing from the inside of the condenser holder – this is a common problem because the clamp can be pulled out
- if the metal ring of the condenser holder has been bent as a result of an impact; in this case, the condenser simply cannot be inserted into the holder
