Zeiss Photomicroscope II microscope body | Zeiss Universal stand / Standard Phomi II
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
Complete microscope stand of the Zeiss Photomicroscope II microscope (another name for this model is Zeiss Standard Phomi II).
The stand includes: -
...
a complete coarse focus mechanism (macro movement) and coaxial fine focus mechanism (micro movement) - a complete base with illuminator holder, field diaphragm and filters - a complete arm with tube holder and EPI illumination selector switch
See also item no. 99584 in this database - it is a similar microscope body that differs only in a few details.
The complete Zeiss Photomicroscope microscope stand may be useful in the following situations: - if you are assembling your own microscope and purchasing individual components in order to build a system that fully meets your expectations - if you own a Zeiss Universal microscope and would like to replace it with a Photomicroscope II model, it is sufficient to replace the stand because the remaining components are compatible - if you own a Zeiss Photomicroscope microscope but its stand is in very poor condition, damaged or incomplete: it has non-functional vertical movement knobs, a damaged diaphragm, or other mechanical problems

Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS / Universal microscope power supply VWH 200/C 250 f-3b fluorescent igniter HBO 200 W/4 P/N 39 23 34
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
Power supply for the HBO 200 fluorescence illuminator used in Zeiss Universal, Zeiss Photomicroscope and other microscopes.
Basic specifications of this power
...
supply: Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss Model: VWH 200/C 250 f-3b Manufacturer P/N: 39 26 34 (also written as 392634) Supported fluorescence lamps: HBO 200 W/4 L1, HBO 200 W/4 L2 and CSI 250W Input voltage: 220 V - 240 V Power rating: 900 VA
This power supply was supplied as standard with Zeiss Photomicroscope microscopes (commonly known as the Zeiss Phomi) whenever the microscope was equipped with an HBO high-pressure fluorescence illuminator (also referred to as a burner or lamp).
The same or very similar illuminators with identical electrical specifications were used in, among others: - Zeiss Standard WL - Zeiss Photomicroscope - Zeiss Universal - Zeiss Ultraphot - such illuminators were also occasionally adapted for use with other microscope models, including those made by other manufacturers Therefore, this power supply is suitable for all of the applications listed above.
Please note: the last photograph shows a dent in the housing. This does not affect the operation of the unit. Since the dent is located on the underside of the housing, it is not visible when the power supply is standing on a laboratory bench.
IMPORTANT: Always protect your eyesight when working with UV illumination. Never exceed the recommended service life of HBO high-pressure lamps. Always follow the operating instructions supplied with the fluorescence illuminator.

Zeiss Photomicroscope II / Universal microscope intermediate trino photo tube with Optovar magnification changer, Bertrand lens and dovetail objective nosepiece holder
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
Intermediate tube with trino / photo output, Optovar magnification changer, objective revolver dovetail mount and Bertrand lens for Zeiss Universal and Photomicroscope
...
(Phomi) microscopes.
This is an intermediate tube forming the main optical module of the microscope. It is mounted onto the microscope arm, and the binocular head is then attached to this intermediate tube. The module integrates the following components: - a third optical path (photo output), which is why this module is sometimes referred to as a trinocular tube - an Optovar magnification changer with a Bertrand lens - a dovetail mount for the objective revolver - a large insert for a round filter and slots for additional inserts
This intermediate tube is compatible with the following microscopes: - Zeiss Universal (Carl Zeiss Standard Universal) - Zeiss Photomicroscope (Zeiss Phomi)
The Optovar magnification changer integrated into this intermediate tube features a rotating turret with the following positions: - PH (Bertrand lens) - 1.25× - 1.6× - 2×
The complexity of this design makes the module susceptible to damage of individual internal components, especially the optical elements (prisms and lenses).

Zeiss Photomicroscope II microscope base and arm (body) with fine- and coarse focus block
|

Description of this part for the microscope.
Complete stand (the so-called microscope body) for the Zeiss Photomicroscope II microscope (abbreviated as Phomi II).
See also item no. 99521 in this database -

it is a similar microscope body that differs only in a few details.
This Zeiss Phomi II microscope body includes: - the coarse and fine focus block together with the focusing knobs - the base (also called the foot or base) with the rear illuminator port, field diaphragm (iris diaphragm), and built-in filters - the microscope arm with the intermediate tube mount (dovetail clamp), photographic film compartment, and all knobs and switches
When can a complete microscope body be useful? - if you are assembling a microscope yourself and selecting every component so that the final configuration is exactly the way you want it - if you have an older model (for example, a Zeiss Universal without EPI reflected-light capability) - replacing the stand effectively upgrades the microscope, while the remaining components can be transferred because they are compatible between these models - if your microscope is damaged or in poor condition - in that case, this microscope body simply replaces the damaged part

Zeiss (West Germany) microscope Ph2 phase annulus insert | phase condenser PH-diaphragm ring
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
Interchangeable Ph2 phase annulus (diaphragm ring) with retaining ring for Zeiss West Germany phase contrast condensers.
Interchangeable diaphragm rings (both for
...
phase contrast and darkfield) allow a phase contrast condenser to be configured individually. This makes it possible to use exactly the observation techniques and exactly the microscope objectives required.
Basic parameters of this phase annulus: Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss (Oberkochen, West Germany) Condenser marking: "2" For objectives: marked "Ph2", i.e. magnifications from 16x to 40x Material: glass mounted in a metal retaining ring with flange Outside diameter of the retaining ring: 22 mm Phase annulus glass diameter: 16 mm Height of the retaining ring: 3.5 mm
Important: this microscope component (phase annulus / phase diaphragm) is not intended for any specific microscope model. It is a component used to upgrade or repair a microscope phase contrast condenser. It is not intended for upgrading or repairing one specific condenser model. Many Carl Zeiss condenser models have a suitable opening into which this phase annulus can be inserted.
This particular phase annulus was removed from a fluorescence phase contrast condenser - an older version of the Zeiss condenser P/N 46 52 78. Before installing it in your condenser, carefully compare the shape of its housing and the dimensions of the retaining ring.
The last photograph in the gallery shows the turret disc of a Zeiss phase contrast condenser. An arrow indicates this very phase annulus - the one offered here - already installed.

Zeiss (West Germany) microscope clear glass ring insert (blank for DIY annuli) | phase condenser diaphragm carrier, complete insert, clear glass
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
Complete clear glass ring insert with retaining ring - without a printed diaphragm (the original coating has been removed) - for Carl Zeiss (West Germany) phase contrast
...
condensers.
Basic parameters of this clear glass insert: Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss (Oberkochen, West Germany) Material: glass mounted in a metal retaining ring with flange Outside diameter of the retaining ring: 22 mm Diameter of the clear glass disc: 16 mm Height of the retaining ring: 3.5 mm
Below are some example applications for this clear glass blank. It can be printed or fitted with, among others: - a phase annulus or darkfield annulus matching the original one that was installed in the condenser but has become damaged - an annulus missing from the condenser - coloured Rheinberg rings - oblique illumination diaphragms producing a DIC-like effect - a Hoffmann modulation contrast pattern - phase annuli for objectives made by other manufacturers, for example Carl Zeiss Jena PhV - any completely custom DIY design
This particular clear glass ring insert was removed from a fluorescence phase contrast condenser - an older version of the Zeiss condenser P/N 46 52 78. Before installing it in your condenser, carefully compare the shape of its housing and the dimensions of the retaining ring.
Interchangeable diaphragm carriers (whether for phase contrast or, for example, darkfield) make it possible to configure a phase contrast condenser exactly as required. This allows the condenser to support precisely the observation techniques and microscope objectives needed.
The clear glass blank presented here is not a component intended for any specific microscope model. Instead, it is used to upgrade or repair a microscope phase contrast condenser. Likewise, it is not dedicated to any specific condenser model. Many Carl Zeiss condenser models have a suitable opening into which this complete insert can be fitted and customised with your own pattern.
The last photograph in the gallery shows the turret disc of a Zeiss phase contrast condenser. An arrow indicates the clear glass ring insert offered here, already installed.

Zeiss (West Germany) microscope Ph2 fluorescence-polarization phase annulus insert | phase condenser PH-diaphragm ring
|

Description of this part for the microscope.
Replaceable PH2 phase contrast annulus (diaphragm) with retaining ring for Zeiss West Germany phase contrast condensers intended for fluorescence-polarization
...
applications.
Replaceable diaphragms (both for phase contrast and darkfield) for phase contrast condensers allow the condenser to be configured individually. Thanks to this, it can support exactly the observation techniques and exactly the microscope objectives that are required.
Important: by installing the fluorescence-polarization diaphragm presented here, a condenser currently equipped with standard phase contrast diaphragms can be upgraded with this unique function. A detailed description of the capabilities offered by this technique is provided below.
Basic parameters of this phase contrast diaphragm: Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss (Oberkochen, West Germany) Condenser marking: "2". On the Zeiss condenser P/N 46 52 78 this position is marked in blue For microscope objectives: to obtain phase contrast operation, use microscope objectives marked "Ph2", i.e. objectives with magnifications from 16x to 40x Substrate material: glass mounted in a metal holder with a flange Ring material: polarizing film Outside diameter of the retaining ring: 22 mm Glass disc diameter: 16 mm Retaining ring height: 3.5 mm
Important: this component (phase contrast annulus / phase contrast diaphragm) is not intended for a specific microscope model. It is a component for upgrading or repairing a microscope phase contrast condenser. It is not intended for upgrading or repairing any specific condenser model. Many Carl Zeiss condenser models have a matching opening into which this phase contrast annulus can be installed.
In the Carl Zeiss condenser P/N 46 52 78, the phase annuli in positions 2 and 3 are not ordinary openings in an opaque mask but openings in a polarizing film. The polarization direction of these annuli is N-S, so the direct light beam that forms the phase contrast image is linearly polarized. Since it is polarized, its intensity can be adjusted continuously with a second polarizer - without any mechanical parts, diaphragms or shutters.
This second polarizer can be any pair of rotatable polarizing filters. In the original Zeiss design, this is the Carl Zeiss light control unit P/N 47 72 20 with two independently rotatable polarizers mounted beneath the condenser. This makes it possible to switch on phase contrast while simultaneously reducing the illumination intensity to a safe level.
- when the polarizer is aligned parallel to the N-S axis of the annulus - full transmission, maximum phase contrast beam, full-strength phase contrast image; - when the polarizer is crossed (E-W) - the annulus "goes dark", the objective phase plate no longer receives the direct beam, and the phase contrast image disappears; - when the polarizer is set to intermediate positions - smooth adjustment of the contribution of the phase contrast image.
When the illumination source is a fluorescence lamp (or, of course, an LED FL light source), simply rotating the polarizer beneath the condenser (together with removing the excitation filter) allows the user to switch from a fluorescence image to a conventional phase contrast image. With the polarizer crossed and the excitation filter installed, the phase annulus is extinguished and only pure fluorescence is visible; as the polarizer is rotated, the phase contrast image gradually increases and is superimposed on the fluorescence image. The second polarizer in unit P/N 47 72 20 is additionally used to attenuate the overall illumination intensity (to protect the specimen or to control the specimen's exposure to fluorescence light).
And now an interesting note from the Ultraphot-shop website https://www.microscopeparts.eu/(http://www.the-ultraphot-shop.org.uk/bicolor.htm), © Spike Walker 2007:
Because the annulus is a linear N-S polarizer, it can be used to produce coloured phase contrast: when a two-colour polarizing filter (Cokin type) is placed between the microscope polarizer and the condenser annulus, the specimen takes on the colour of the illuminating annulus against the background colour of the remaining part of the disc - for example, an orange specimen on a green background when using a red-green filter.
This particular phase contrast annulus was removed from a fluorescence phase contrast condenser - an older version of the Zeiss condenser P/N 46 52 78. Before deciding to install it in your condenser, carefully compare the shape of its housing and the dimensions of the retaining ring.
The last photograph in the gallery shows the turret from a Zeiss phase contrast condenser. The arrow indicates the phase contrast annulus offered here, already installed.

Zeiss Photomicroscope II / Universal microscope 60W illuminator with lamp housing
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
60-watt microscope illuminator for Carl Zeiss (Oberkochen, West Germany) Standard series microscopes.
The basic versions of Carl Zeiss Standard series microscopes
...
are equipped with a base illuminator using a 6 V 15 W lamp. This can be replaced with: a) a large 60-watt illuminator using a 12 V 60 W lamp b) a halogen illuminator
This listing presents the illuminator described in option a), namely the 60 W incandescent lamp version.
Basic specifications of this illuminator: Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss (Oberkochen, West Germany) Model: 60-watt illuminator Lamp voltage: 12 V Lamp house mounting method: circular dovetail Cooling: passive. The entire large lamp house also serves as a heat sink, dissipating the heat generated by the 60-watt lamp Lamp socket centering screws: yes, the lamp socket is equipped with centering screws Diffuser: yes, inside the lamp house, in front of the lamp condenser lens (the so-called illumination collector), there is a matte diffuser mounted in a flip-out holder
This particular unit was removed from a Carl Zeiss Photomicroscope II. However, it is compatible with most microscopes of the Zeiss Standard series.
This illuminator fits the following microscopes: - Zeiss Standard 16 / GFL - Zeiss Standard WL / WL 89 - Zeiss Universal - Zeiss Photomicroscope - Zeiss Photomicroscope II - Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS - and also the Zeiss IM 35 / ICM 405 inverted microscope
The following is a quotation from the Zeiss Photomicroscope II instruction manual:
60-watt illuminator
Instead of the 6-v. 15-w base illuminator, the 60-watt illuminator may be firmly connected to the microscope stand. For this purpose, the collector tube with lamp condenser, 46 70 50, must be removed after unscrewing the bottom plate and replaced by the connecting tube, 46 70 41 (Fig. 15). The 60-watt illuminator is mounted in the usual manner with the aid of a dovetail ring, like a body tube, for example.
The variable transformer is identical to the one for the base illuminator and supplies voltages from 0 ... 20 volts. When this equipment is used, the red scale of the voltmeter applies.
Several important points should be mentioned: - if your microscope is currently equipped with the standard 6 V 15 W illumination system, the illuminator mounting adapter must also be replaced (this is described in the instruction manual quoted above) - the lamp house of this illuminator is finished in grey. Some Carl Zeiss Standard series microscopes have black, cream or hammered-finish housings. This illuminator is mechanically compatible with those models, although the colour may not be an aesthetically perfect match - power supplies with a rated output of exactly 60 W are virtually unavailable on the second-hand market. In practice, 12 V 100 W power supplies are used to operate this light source - please note that exactly the same (!) illuminator is also used on the Zeiss IM 35 / ICM 405 inverted microscopes. Please also refer to the description of illuminator No. 00697 in this database. YES - these are exactly the same illuminators. However, that particular unit was removed from an inverted microscope and therefore has its own separate description. You will also find additional photographs there. In the Zeiss IM 35 instruction manual, the lamp socket is referred to as "Lamp socket 60 P/N 46 80 15", while the lamp house is referred to as "Lamp housing with lamp condenser P/N 46 72 27" - this illuminator can be used for both transmitted-light and reflected-light (EPI) illumination - if you would like to manufacture your own DIY illuminator mounting adapter because you do not have the original Zeiss part (P/N 46 70 41), the following information may be useful: the circular dovetail on this illuminator has a diameter of 43 mm, which is the same as on many microscope condensers and mono-, binocular and trinocular microscope heads. This means that, for example, a microscope head mounting adapter can be used as the basis for manufacturing a custom DIY illuminator adapter
Important: The photographs show a lamp installed in the lamp socket. This lamp DOES NOT LIGHT because it is burned out. It is shown only so that you can see which lamp model is used in this illuminator.

Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS power supply cable with 12 pin plug, 2x6 flat contacts, from microscope base
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
Carl Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS power supply cable with 12 pin plug, 2x6 flat contacts, from microscope base
This is one of two cables coming out of the base of
...
the Zeiss Photomicroscope III microscope. The following cables come out of it: - with a 12 pin plug (2x6) - with a 22 pin plug (2x10 + 2)
The cable presented here ends with a 12 pin plug, that is 6 rows of two flat contacts each. Marking on the plug: "Siemens DIN41622 VG95322 A12".
The cable was tested before being removed from a working microscope. The plug is fully functional, its plastic housing is neither broken nor crumbled, and all contacts are straight. Attaching / soldering on the base side has to be taken care of on your own.
Several names are used for this microscope model, among others: - Carl Zeiss Photomicroscope III - Carl Zeiss Phomi III - Carl Zeiss PM III - Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS - Zeiss Phomi 3 - Zeiss PM3 RS
Replacing this cable can solve, among others, the following problems: - when the microscope has a cut off cable, which is common when it comes from an institution that scraps electrical equipment this way - when the microscope has a cable with a plug whose housing is broken, cracked or chipped - when the microscope has a cable ending in a plug with broken off flat contacts - when the microscope has a cable in which the plug has a damaged latch
A new plug of this type can be bought today. It is the DIN 41622 standard, a two row arrangement of 3.0 x 1 mm blade contacts, 12 poles - produced continuously for decades and offered today by Telegärtner, Binder, MPE and EVG among others. At Telegärtner the 12 pole male connector carries the number 100023261, and the matching female connector the number 100023250. One has to keep in mind, however, that this is only the contact insert itself: the cable housing (metal or plastic) together with the mounting trough is bought separately, the guide pins that also serve as coding are bought separately, the cable of the right cross section is bought separately, and all twelve contacts have to be soldered. Some users will appreciate owning an original cable with a period plug whose coding matches their microscope, while others will be glad that I have given the designations of the new equivalents and can go their own way.

Zeiss Photomicroscope III RS cable supplying exposure automation with 22 pin plug, 2x10 + 2 flat contacts, from microscope base
|
|
Description of this part for the microscope.
Cable supplying the exposure automation, to the power supply, with 22 pin plug, 2x10 + 2 flat contacts, from the base of the Carl Zeiss Photomicroscope III
...
microscope
This is one of two cables coming out of the base of the Zeiss Photomicroscope III microscope. The following cables come out of it: - with a 12 pin plug (2x6) - with a 22 pin plug (2x10 + 2)
The cable presented here ends with a 22 pin plug, that is 10 rows of two flat contacts each plus two single contacts in the middle. In the Zeiss manual the matching socket on the power supply is described as a 22 pole socket for the supply voltages of the automatic exposure control. There is no standard designation on the plug - only the marking "Siemens" and the letter "R" are visible.

I have not found a new 22 pole plug in the current catalogues of the makers of this blade connector family - this pole count falls outside the range produced today. What remains is the second hand market. An original, working cable with a period plug saves you that search.
