Description
Lomo MBI-1 / Biolam microscope rotating, round stage | also Carl Zeiss Jena Lg / Lumipan compatibleRound, rotating microscope stage by Carl Zeiss Jena.
Basic technical data:
- - shape
- round stage
- - rotation
- yes
- - rotation locking screw
- yes
- - micrometer scale
- no
- - dedicated for polarization
- no
- - material
- aluminium with plastic elements
- - mounting diameter
- 73 mm
This stage fits the following microscopes:
- Lomo MBI-1
- Lomo MBR-3
- Lomo Biolam
- Lomo sold under the names Bresser and Zenith
This Lomo stage also fits microscopes:
- Carl Zeiss Jena L-Stativ
- Carl Zeiss Jena Lg
- Carl Zeiss Jena Lu
- Carl Zeiss Jena Lr
- Carl Zeiss Jena Lumipan
If any of the above microscopes currently has a fixed stage (screwed), it is possible to retrofit a holder for interchangeable stages (like this: [[ LINK ]]) - this applies to both Lomo and Carl Zeiss Jena microscopes.
How does compatibility of stages between Carl Zeiss Jena and Lomo microscopes work?
- Carl Zeiss Jena stages for L-Stativ microscopes have a mounting diameter of 71 mm
- Lomo stages for MBR-3 / MBI-1 microscopes have a mounting diameter of 73 mm
- The spring-loaded front screw and long side centering screws in the mounting holder compensate for these differences
- Carl Zeiss Jena stages are more solid, heavier, made of brass
- Lomo stages are lighter, made of aluminium with plastic elements
From the 1930s to approximately the mid-1960s many German manufacturers produced microscopes with the same stage mounting standard, so this stage will also fit them.
Note that although this is a round and rotating stage, it is not a polarizing stage. It does not have a micrometer scale to read how many degrees (0-360) the rotation has occurred. Without this scale it can of course be used for amateur observations in polarized light, however for professional applications this is disqualifying.

Why do you need this?
- if you have a microscope without a stage
- if you have a microscope with a stage but it is damaged or of very poor quality, e.g. with heavily worn surface
- as a service part as a full replacement if your current stage has stopped rotating
- if you want to replace a square stage with a round one or have both
- if you need a rotating stage for amateur polarization
- if you need a rotating stage e.g. for video recording
- if you need a rotating stage for DIY projects
