Because it works without a cover glass and has a high numerical aperture N.A., this objective can be attractive for macro photographers. It allows projection directly onto the camera sensor - without any intermediate optics.
This objective was removed from a Leitz SM microscope, but it fits most Leitz Wetzlar microscopes made before roughly 1980 (SM, SM-D, SM-Lux, Dialux, Ortholux, Orthoplan, etc.).
Some useful information about Leitz Wetzlar objectives with TL=170 mm and 37 mm parfocal length:
- most Leitz microscopes made before roughly 1980 accept objectives for both 160 mm and 170 mm tube length
- many Leitz microscopes accept objectives with both 37 mm and 45 mm parfocal length
- with an 8 mm RMS extension adapter, such an objective gets a parfocal length of 45 mm. Leitz made such adapters under the name "Plezy" - but many users make their own, from metal or on 3D printers
Like a large share of microscope objectives made in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s, this objective has a 37 mm parfocal length and a 170 mm tube length. For this reason it is often used as a replacement objective for other German microscopes, e.g.:

This objective fits practically any microscope from any manufacturer, as long as it has an RMS thread and accepts objectives with TL=170 mm and a parfocal length of 33 / 37 mm (or 45 mm with a suitable adapter). Some examples of such microscopes are listed in the "compatibility" section, but this list is not complete.
