PZO MND-5 microscope binocular head dovetail connector - photo gallery

This is description of this part:

Mounting connector for attaching a PZO microscope head to the microscope stand. This connector comes from a binocular (two-eyepiece) PZO MND-5 head, but it also fits the monocular (single-eyepiece) PZO MNJ-5 head.

PZO microscope models from the 1950s do not share a common standard for head mounting connectors. However, if the head is not permanently fixed to the microscope, the connector can usually be unscrewed and replaced with another one, allowing the head to be used with microscope models that have a different head mounting interface.

In order to replace the connector in the head, several important conditions must be met:
- the replacement connector must not contain any optical elements
- the replacement connector must have the same thread diameter so that it can be screwed into the head

Basic dimensions:
- internal thread diameter for mounting the connector to the head: 35 mm
- connector diameter at the groove: according to the measurement on the photo, between 31.5 and 32 mm
- connector diameter at the widest point: 34 mm
- diameter of the ring above the connector: 40 mm
- total height of the connector: 35 mm

On the secondary market, it is quite common to find a microscope head with the lower part missing, namely the mounting connector. Why does this happen? Sometimes, when removing the head from the microscope, the user does not realize that it can be pulled out and instead starts unscrewing it. As a result, the head separates from the microscope, but the mounting connector remains in the stand. Such an incomplete head then appears on the secondary market. In this situation, the only way to restore the microscope part to working condition is to add the missing connector element.
