Commonly used, cheap cover glasses are 0.17 mm thick mostly on paper. Even the standard for class #1.5 allows a range of 0.16-0.19 mm, and cheap Chinese cover glasses in practice come in anywhere from approx. 0.13 to 0.25 mm, often not matching the thickness stated on the box. Only #1.5H (high precision) cover glasses have a guaranteed thickness of 0.170 mm with a tolerance of +/- 0.005 mm. With high-aperture dry objectives such as this Apochromat 50x/0.95, variation in cover glass thickness noticeably reduces image contrast and resolution (spherical aberration). The correction collar fitted to this objective lets you adjust the optics to the combined thickness of the cover glass and the mounting medium layer beneath it, within a range of 0.12 mm to 0.22 mm. This compensates for most of the variation encountered in practice.
