This is an external electric illuminator for older type microscopes that use a mirror as a light source.

Mirror microscopes may have the mirror mounted vertically or horizontally, and this lamp (this illuminator) is compatible with both mounting types, as it has two mounting pins.

Note that this illuminator uses bulbs with a standard E14 socket, so an LED bulb can also be installed.

The PZO LM-2 illuminator has a place for a round filter with a diameter of 32 mm. Typically, the following are placed there:
- a diffuser to achieve uniform illumination
- a blue filter to convert the yellow, warm bulb light into a more white (cool) light
- or a blue diffuser to achieve both effects at the same time

Note - the PZO LM-2 illuminator is a so-called "simple" illuminator and does not allow achieving Koehler illumination. An external microscope lamp operating in the Koehler standard is called PZO LMK.

This is a universal microscope lamp and can be used with microscopes from many manufacturers.

This model has a metal housing with no lens at its end. Additionally, this housing can be unscrewed without affecting the operation of the objective - resulting in a relatively large working distance of more than 20 mm.

Three features:
- large working distance exceeding 20 mm
- exceptionally high numerical aperture N.A. of 0.15
- achromatic correction allowing direct projection use
make this relatively uncommon model very frequently chosen for macro photography using a microscope objective connected to a camera (focus stacking).

The fact that this objective has FL = 33 mm allows it to be used with microscopes from other manufacturers, including:
- Lomo Biolam
- Lomo MBB-1A
- Carl Zeiss Jena LG / Lu / Lumipan
- Carl Zeiss Jena Nf
- Olympus CH

Note! Please note that the FL = 33 mm focal length means that this objective DOES NOT FIT the following microscopes:
- PZO Biolar
- PZO Studar

Early versions of this objective (with low serial numbers) have the engraved marking 5/0.15 160/0 suggesting that the objective is intended for use without a cover glass. This is true, but more precisely this objective can work both without a cover glass and with one. In newer versions the engraving already reads 5/0.15 160/- where this "minus" already means "indifferent".

Please note that this objective was designed for microscopes with a 170 mm tube length. This refers to older PZO microscope models:
- PZO MinO
- PZO M100
- PZO ML1 / ML2 and ML3
- PZO MB1 and MB2
- however, this is definitely not a complete list

It can be used with any microscope capable of accepting RMS objectives with TL=170 mm and FL=33 mm. After installing a 12 mm adapter, this objective will of course have FL=45 mm.

Many microscopes from the 1950s and 1960s support both TL=170 mm and TL=160 mm objectives. Interestingly, in many microscopes designed for a 160 mm tube length it is possible to use objectives designed for a 170 mm tube length if the microscope eyepieces are pulled out by 10 mm in the head tube (a solution used in Leitz Wetzlar microscopes).
