Olympus BX40 microscope angle mirror, collimation lens and filter holder | repair spare part

The name of this microscope part.

Olympus BX40 microscope angle mirror, collimation lens and filter holder | repair spare part

Description of this part for the microscope.

Service part (repair element) for Olympus BX microscopes. This is an angle mirror which reflects the light from the illuminator located in the microscope base (in the ...

stand base) of the microscope (that is transmitted light). On the outside there is a lens that collimates the light and a place where filters are placed. The mirror is in excellent condition - however, in my opinion it is attached in an unusual way. Either the manufacturer used a large amount of adhesive to secure it properly - or somebody did this later during the years of use using a large amount of adhesive. Of course this has no effect on operation - operation is flawless - but I want to point this out.

This is a part removed from the stand of an Olympus BX40 microscope. It has been tested and cleaned - and is suitable for use as a service element for repairing a damaged microscope. Many smaller Olympus service elements do not have their own catalog numbers or commercial names, therefore in the last photos in the gallery I indicate with an arrow exactly which element is being offered and where it is located inside the microscope. In this description some names used are descriptive rather than official technical commercial names.

Olympus BX series microscopes use identical assemblies in many different models, therefore there is a high probability that this element - although removed from a BX40 model - is also compatible with other BX series models (for example BX41, BX43, BX50, BX51 etc.). However, before deciding to install such an element in an Olympus BX microscope, it is advisable to first carefully compare shapes and dimensions or ask appropriate questions on forums and in Olympus BX microscope user groups.

PZO Biolar DIC microscope angle mirror AK11

The name of this microscope part.

PZO Biolar DIC microscope angle mirror AK11

Description of this part for the microscope.

Angle mirror for PZO Biolar microscopes.

Compatible with the following variants of the PZO Biolar microscope:
- PZO Biolar B
- PZO Biolar UPI (DIC)
- ...

PZO Biolar P (Pol)
- PZO Biolar FL (Fluorescence)

The function of this component is to reflect light coming from the microscope base vertically upward so that, after passing through the specimen slide and the objective, it reaches the eyepieces and ultimately the user's eyes.

This cast component bears the marking "AK11", and this designation is commonly used on the secondary market to identify this particular angle mirror. However, it is not a part number, because the marking "AK11" can also be found on other PZO microscope components, which may lead to confusion. It is very likely that the source of this confusion is the attempt to compare PZO metal components with those used in Carl Zeiss Jena microscopes, where cast parts are marked with numbers in the format "Si10 CZ xxxxx". This may incorrectly lead people to assume that PZO used a similar numbering system.

Replacement of the angle mirror in PZO Biolar microscopes may be necessary in the following situations:
- if the mirror has become heavily scratched due to improper cleaning (minor scratches are usually not visible during normal use)
- if the silver reflective coating of the installed mirror becomes oxidized
- if the mirror becomes damaged, chipped, or cracked, for example after coming loose from its mounting

Lomo Polam polarizing microscope double-sided mirror

The name of this microscope part.

Lomo Polam polarizing microscope double-sided mirror

Description of this part for the microscope.

Double-sided mirror for a Lomo Polam polarizing microscope.

Lomo Polam microscopes (all models except the Lomo Polam LMPR, Polam L-211 and Polam L- ...

213) do not have a built-in illuminator integrated into the microscope stand. Instead, they use external Lomo illuminators mounted on the microscope, for example the simple Lomo OI-32 illuminator or the Lomo OI-35 Koehler illuminator.

Users who require a more powerful light source for their work (for example 100 W) often use external illuminators mounted on separate stands - and this mirror is used to redirect that light into the optical system. Users also frequently experiment with different types of illumination (quartz, halogen, red or fluorescent light) - and this mirror is intended for such applications as well.

Mechanically, the mirror is integrated with a mounting base having a diameter of 43.5 mm, exactly matching the opening in the microscope base. When installed in this way, the mirror is stable and allows comfortable operation with high-power external light sources.

The last photograph in the gallery is a poster containing a comparison table of various Lomo Polam microscope models. It allows you to see exactly where and which illuminators are mounted in different Lomo Polam microscopes - and therefore also where this mirror is installed.

Reichert Zetopan microscope 12V 100W Lux-US halogen illuminator spherical rear reflector

The name of this microscope part.

Reichert Zetopan microscope 12V 100W Lux-US halogen illuminator spherical rear reflector

Description of this part for the microscope.

Repair component for the Lux-US halogen illuminator (12V 100W) used in the Reichert Zetopan microscope and other microscope models using an illuminator with the same ...

housing.

This is a spherical rear reflector mirror mounted inside the halogen illuminator behind the lamp. The function of this element is to collect and reflect the light that "shines backwards and escapes" and direct it towards the collimating lens.

Important: the Lux-US halogen illuminator was used exclusively in Reichert Zetopan microscopes.

Reichert Diapan and Reichert MeF-2 microscopes do not use the Lux-US illuminator, however the illuminators used in these microscopes have an identical mechanical housing and use the same rear reflector mirror.

Therefore, the mirror presented here is also compatible with these microscopes - it is a repair part for the illuminator rather than for a specific microscope.

Older Reichert Zetopan microscope models were equipped with a 6V 30W illuminator, while newer models used the Lux-US illuminator with a 12V 100W halogen lamp. Currently (as of 2026), most amateur microscope users believe that this illuminator should be converted to an LED light source, while professional users still prefer a halogen bulb as a light source because of its full colour spectrum.
However, in both cases this lampenhaus is essential and must be repaired if damaged. Since it protrudes beyond the outline of the microscope (it is attached to the rear of the microscope base), it is exposed to mechanical damage. The mirror located directly next to the light source is susceptible to damage, among other reasons, due to exposure to high temperatures. In addition, over the decades the mirror surface may oxidise, causing the mirror to lose its optical properties and the entire illuminator to lose brightness.

Information from the manufacturer's English-language catalogue "Zetopan Research Microscope. Price List, Effective December 1, 1976":
- This component belongs to the microscope illuminator. The catalogue number of the illuminator is: "Lux US" 9 14 41 04 and "Binolux 3 dual lamp housing" 9 60 05 21

In the photo gallery you will find the exact dimensions of this element, and the last photo shows the complete Lux-US illuminator for the Reichert Zetopan microscope, allowing compatibility to be confirmed with certainty.

Nikon Optiphot / Labophot microscope Hg 100W / HBO fluorescence illuminator spherical rear reflector mirror

The name of this microscope part.

Nikon Optiphot / Labophot microscope Hg 100W / HBO fluorescence illuminator spherical rear reflector mirror

Description of this part for the microscope.

Replacement part for an HBO / Hg 100W fluorescence illuminator used with Nikon Optiphot microscopes and other microscope models equipped with an illuminator of the same ...

mechanical design.

This is the spherical rear reflector mounted inside the fluorescence illuminator behind the lamp. Its function is to collect and reflect the light that is emitted backwards and would otherwise be lost, directing it towards the collimating lens.

This particular reflector was removed from a fluorescence illuminator used on a Nikon Optiphot microscope. Hg 100W / HBO 100W illuminators of this type, or mechanically identical versions using the same rear reflector, were fitted to, among others:
- Nikon Optiphot
- Nikon Labophot
- Nikon Microphot

Therefore, the reflector presented here is also compatible with these microscopes. However, it should primarily be regarded as a replacement part for the fluorescence illuminator rather than for a specific microscope model.

When may the rear reflector need to be replaced?
- High-pressure fluorescence lamps used as the light source in these illuminators may explode, damaging the rear reflector and often the collimating lens as well.
- In addition, because the reflector is located immediately next to the light source, it is exposed to very high temperatures and is therefore susceptible to thermal damage.
- Another common issue is oxidation of the reflective surface over the course of decades. When this happens, the reflector loses its optical performance and the entire illuminator produces significantly less light.

Important: Nikon EPI fluorescence illuminators of that period were manufactured in several different lamp house versions. They are most commonly referred to simply as:
- Nikon Hg 100W
- Nikon HBO 100W
- Nikon HBO 100W HG Lamp House

Reichert Zetopan microscope light collector with flip-out wide field lens and filter holder

The name of this microscope part.

Reichert Zetopan microscope light collector with flip-out wide field lens and filter holder

Description of this part for the microscope.

Transmitted light collector with a flip-out wide field lens and mirror prism for the Reichert Austria Zetopan microscope.

Mechanically, this collector is located ...

inside the microscope base beneath the condenser. It is secured from above with three screws. The collector housing also incorporates a holder for 32 mm round filters.

This component performs several functions:
- it collimates the light beam
- it also serves as a holder for round filters
- it redirects the horizontal light beam coming from the lamp house vertically upwards
- the flip-out wide field lens provides even illumination of the entire specimen when using low-magnification objectives

Replacement of this collector in a Reichert Zetopan microscope may be necessary in the following situations, among others:
- if this component is missing because someone removed it, for example during an unfinished repair
- if the upper protective glass of the collector has been broken
- if the mechanism operating the flip-out wide field lens has been damaged
- if - as often happens - the mirror prism has been damaged, broken, or its reflective surface has deteriorated through oxidation

Information from the manufacturer's English-language catalogue "Zetopan Research Microscope. Price List, Effective December 1, 1976":
- This component belongs to the microscope stand. The catalogue number of the stand is: 9 90 00 01

The last photographs in the gallery show the base of a Reichert Zetopan microscope (in this case the older black version). An arrow indicates exactly which component it is and where it is located. The collector is shown both from the outside and in its installed position inside the microscope base. This makes it easy to identify the component correctly.

Reichert Zetopan microscope EPI reflected light angle mirror switch

The name of this microscope part.

Reichert Zetopan microscope EPI reflected light angle mirror switch

Description of this part for the microscope.

EPI reflected-light angle mirror assembly for the base of the Reichert Austria Zetopan microscope.

The Reichert Zetopan microscope uses a single light source (the ...

illuminator attached to the rear of the microscope base). This light source is shared by both transmitted light (DIA) and reflected light (EPI). Inside the microscope base there are two light-directing mirrors operated by control knobs located on the top of the base housing. These controls are marked "EPI" and "MIX". The "EPI" switch moves a mirror into the light path, directing 100% of the light into the reflected-light illumination path (vertically upward through a dedicated lens located inside the microscope base). This is exactly the assembly offered here — the EPI reflected-light angle mirror switch complete with its mirror and movement mechanism.

Information taken from the manufacturer's English-language catalogue "Zetopan Research Microscope. Price List, Effective December 1, 1976":
- This component belongs to the microscope stand. The stand has catalogue number: 9 90 00 01

This component — or individual parts of it — is frequently damaged. Replacing it with the assembly offered here can solve, among others, the following problems:
- if the "EPI" control knob operating the mirror has become bent or broken
- if the light-directing mirror has cracked, chipped, become scratched due to improper cleaning, or its reflective surface has oxidised
- if the movement mechanism, gear, spring or guide pin has been damaged

The last photographs in the gallery clearly indicate, using an arrow, exactly which component is being offered and where it is located inside the microscope. This makes identification straightforward.

The video gallery also contains two videos. One demonstrates how this reflected-light angle mirror operates and moves while installed in the Reichert Zetopan microscope base. The second shows the component after removal, including close-up views from different angles and all of its moving parts.

Reichert Zetopan microscope MIX plate beamsplitter | semi-reflective filter switching mechanism for reflected and transmitted light

The name of this microscope part.

Reichert Zetopan microscope MIX plate beamsplitter | semi-reflective filter switching mechanism for reflected and transmitted light

Description of this part for the microscope.

Semi-reflective MIX plate - (beam-splitting filter) for the Reichert Austria Zetopan microscope.

The Reichert Zetopan microscope has a single light source (an ...

illuminator connected at the rear of the microscope base). This light source is shared by both the transmitted light (DIA) and the reflected light (EPI). Inside the base there are two light-reflecting mirrors, controlled by knobs located on top of the microscope base housing. These switches are labelled "EPI" and "MIX". The "MIX" switch introduces a semi-transparent plate filter into the optical path; it reflects 50% of the light onto the reflected-light path (vertically upward, through a special lens fitted in the base) and passes the remaining 50% onward for transmitted-light illumination. It is precisely this module - the MIX switch with its beam-splitting plate and the mechanism that moves this filter - that I present here.

Information from the manufacturer's English-language catalogue "Zetopan Research Microscope. Price List, Effective December 1, 1976":
- This is an element from the base of the microscope stand. This stand has the catalogue number: 9 90 00 01

This part - or its individual components - is frequently damaged. Replacing it with the part presented here allows you to solve, among others, the following problems:
- if the "MIX" knob on the base that controls the semi-transparent filter has become bent or has broken off
- if this plate-type light-beam splitter has cracked or chipped, has become scratched through improper cleaning, or its reflective surface has oxidised
- if the movement mechanism has been damaged: the gear, the spring or the pin

In the last photos of the gallery, an arrow indicates exactly which element is meant and where it is located in the microscope. This allows for unambiguous identification of this element.

Additionally, the video gallery contains two films. One shows the operation and the movement mechanics of this beam divider when it is installed in the base of the Reichert Zetopan microscope. The second film shows this part already removed, with close-ups from various angles and the moving components.

Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar microscope HBO 250W fluorescence illuminator spherical rear reflector

The name of this microscope part.

Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar microscope HBO 250W fluorescence illuminator spherical rear reflector

Description of this part for the microscope.

Replacement element for the HBO 250W fluorescence illuminator for Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar microscopes.

This is a spherical rear reflector mounted inside the ...

fluorescence illuminator behind the high-pressure mercury burner. In Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar microscopes, the large HBO 250W fluorescence illuminator is attached to the Spiegelhaus for light beam splitting.

The function of this element is to collect and reflect toward the KG filter the light that "shines and escapes to the rear".

This mirror, located directly next to the light source, is susceptible to damage, among other things due to exposure to high temperatures. Additionally, when the high-pressure mercury burner explodes (which occasionally happens), the mirror is very often damaged by the explosion.

The photo gallery shows the exact dimensions of this element. The last photo shows the HBO 250W illuminator for a Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar microscope, allowing the compatibility to be confirmed with certainty.
