Such a solution works well at low magnifications; however, when working with objectives of magnifications greater than 40x (e.g. 60x, 63x, 80x or 100x), precise manual movement of the specimen becomes very difficult. At total magnifications exceeding about 400x, even a slight movement of the hand shifts the image by a considerable distance within the field of view. The mechanical manipulator enables very smooth, controlled and repeatable movement of the specimen in both axes, which is particularly important during observation with oil immersion and when producing photographic documentation.

When might this microscope part need to be replaced?
- if the microscope has a condenser holder in which the clamping screw is missing, bent, or broken off with a fragment remaining in the thread. This is a common fault
- if the clamp is missing from the inside of the condenser holder - this is a common problem because the clamp can be pulled out
- if the metal ring of the condenser holder has been bent as a result of an impact; in this case, the condenser simply cannot be inserted into the holder

- a socket for connecting the power cord
- an ON / OFF switch
- a knob for adjusting the light intensity (brighter-darker)
- the necessary internal electronics
- an LED light source
- IMPORTANT - as can be seen in the photos, there is no light collector in the base

Some older versions of microscopes based on the N-117M design have halogen illumination (rather than LED, as in the base presented here) - but the shape and the way the base is attached to the microscope arm are the same. A base with halogen illumination and a base with LED illumination can therefore be used interchangeably as a way of upgrading the microscope.

When might it be necessary to replace the microscope base?
- if the microscope base is of very poor quality (it may sometimes have been broken during transport)
- if you want to replace a base with halogen illumination with one with LED illumination
- if something inside the existing base has been damaged: the electronics, switch, or brightness adjustment knob

Because of their very high quality they are often used on microscopes from other manufacturers as well, especially when Carl Zeiss Jena Planachromat objectives are mounted in them. The "compatibility" section lists a long series of microscopes these eyepieces fit - but that list is definitely not complete.

Important: these eyepieces work both on microscopes with a finite tube length (160 mm, for example) and on microscopes with infinity optics. That means you can use them on the Carl Zeiss Jena Amplival microscope just as well as on the Carl Zeiss Jena NU-2 microscope.

A note - eyepieces with such a strong magnification are in my opinion better suited to a quick look than to permanent work. I write "in my opinion" on purpose, because this comes from using them and not from the manufacturer's description.
A 16x eyepiece magnification should be treated as a zoom that brings out no additional detail (the resolution is not increased). This matters for example with heads that have their own extra magnification (such as Carl Zeiss Jena heads with a built-in 1.5x or 1.6x factor) - working with a 100x oil immersion objective you then theoretically get 100*1.5*16 = 2400x, while physics does not allow light from the visible range to be usefully magnified for the human eye beyond roughly 1250x - so this is what is called empty magnification.

That was the period when manufacturers were experimenting with a new look for microscope parts, and exactly the same black series appeared for instance in the Leitz / Leica HM-LUX 3 microscope or in the Will Wetzlar V300 / V355 / V365 microscopes.
