Carl Zeiss Jena Technival and Technival-2 microscopes use stepwise magnification switching (built-in magnification turret), while Carl Zeiss Jena Citoval and Citoval-2 microscopes feature continuously variable magnification (so-called zoom) - therefore the objectives are not interchangeable between these models.

This particular achromatic objective shown and offered here was removed from a Carl Zeiss Jena Citoval-2 microscope. Unfortunately, I am not certain whether it also fits the Carl Zeiss Jena Citoval microscope (without the "2").

For this microscope element in the Carl Zeiss Jena Citoval-2 microscope, the manufacturer uses several different names:

When the name "Opton" appears, it is printed on the label, while the word "Zeiss" underneath has often been washed off, worn away or scraped off at the factory. Commonly used, cheap cover glasses are 0.17 mm thick mostly on paper. Even the standard for class #1.5 allows a range of 0.16-0.19 mm, and cheap Chinese cover glasses in practice come in anywhere from approx. 0.13 to 0.25 mm, often not matching the thickness stated on the box. Only #1.5H (high precision) cover glasses have a guaranteed thickness of 0.170 mm with a tolerance of +/- 0.005 mm. With high-aperture dry objectives such as this Apochromat 50x/0.95, variation in cover glass thickness noticeably reduces image contrast and resolution (spherical aberration). The correction collar fitted to this objective lets you adjust the optics to the combined thickness of the cover glass and the mounting medium layer beneath it, within a range of 0.12 mm to 0.22 mm. This compensates for most of the variation encountered in practice.
