Description of this part for the microscope.

kind used in microscopes of the LOMO Biolam class.

The prism measures 30 mm in length and 17 mm in width and is held inside the head by a metal plate, which is screwed to the cast housing of the head and presses the prism into position. Both this clamping plate and the screws are included and can be seen in the gallery photos.

Replacing the prism may be necessary in the following cases, among others:
- when the prism mount works loose over the years, the prism falls out of its seat and is mechanically damaged as a result
- when the mirrored surface inside the prism oxidises and the prism loses its properties
- when the surface of the prism is attacked by mould or scratched mechanically, for example as a result of improper cleaning

The last photo shows a LOMO Biolam R-1 microscope with an arrow pointing to the place inside the head where this prism sits. It also matters that the photo shows what this head model looks like, the one the prism offered here fits.

Although some of the microscope versions listed above were originally sold with the LOMO AU-12 binocular head, they are often found on the second-hand market with monocular heads. That is precisely why I have included them in the list here.

from the factory with five types of stage:
- small square, screwed on (in the portable models of the D series: LOMO Д1 / Д2 / Д3 / Д11 / Д12 / Д13)
- larger square, screwed on (in the student models of the S series: LOMO Biolam C1 / C2 / C3 / C11 / C12 / C13)
- round, rotating, interchangeable (in the working models of the R series: P1 / P2 / P3 / P4 / P11 / P12 / P13 / P14)
- large square with built-in mechanical XY movement (in a few models of the R series: P5 / P6 / P15 / P16)
- round, rotating, interchangeable, with built-in mechanical XY movement (in the P7 and P17 models)

No interchangeable stage could be fitted to a LOMO Biolam with a screwed-on stage, because those models have no stage carrier for it - all they have is the stage holder for the fixed stage.

The part offered here is an original adapter made by LOMO. It lets you upgrade exactly those models that otherwise take only fixed, screwed-on stages, so that they accept interchangeable stages as well - and not only round ones.

Why do I write that non-round interchangeable stages can be fitted, when none appear in the list above? Because this adapter will also take Carl Zeiss Jena stages on a Lomo Biolam - and that manufacturer offered interchangeable square stages with built-in mechanical XY movement too.

Key data of this stage carrier for interchangeable stages:
Manufacturer: LOMO (ЛОМО)
Fitting: the adapter is screwed onto the stage holder of the fixed stage with 4 screws (included)
Hole spacing: two rows of two screw holes each. Spacing in the first row (measured from hole centre to hole centre): 70 mm. The spacing of the second row, measured the same way: 41 mm. Diagonal distance between a hole in the first row and one in the second: 20 mm
Centering: yes, a stage sitting in this mount can be centered with two screws (included)
Rotation: yes, if the stage itself allows it (polarising stages, for example), it can be turned once mounted
Stages accepted: they need a round mounting boss 70 to 72.5 mm in diameter (this tolerance is allowed by the spring pressure screw and the centering screws)

A note on fitting: one of the four screws that fasten this adapter to the stage holder is shorter than the others - and has to be. You can see this in the gallery photos.

This case is of most value to users and collectors who own LOMO objectives, but you can of course keep objectives from any manufacturer in it, for example Carl Zeiss Jena.

Description of this part for the microscope.

head sits on the microscope body on a round aluminium dovetail (). The inner opening of this mount measures about 35 mm, while the angle prism inside the head () is only 17 mm wide (about 15 mm in effective width). To prevent artefacts such as reflections (flares) or a milky image, LOMO fitted a dedicated stop into the dovetail of the head, limiting the amount of light and shaping the beam that enters the head. This is the very part offered here.

Key data of this baffle:
Function: limiting the amount of light that reaches the prism inside the monocular head
Material: plastic

Outer diameter: 37 mm
Diameter of the inner opening: 13,5 mm
Fitting: pushed in from below into the mount of the monocular head - the part is press-fitted, not screwed in

Very important: this glare stop is made of very thin plastic. Over the years the material turns very (!) brittle - and that is why heads without this light stop turn up so often. For the same reason, unfortunately, you have to fit the insert into the head with great care, so that the plastic does not break during assembly.

With this black baffle missing, artefacts can appear that are visible to the naked eye or when taking photomicrographs with a camera or a mobile phone.

If the baffle is missing from the monocular tube of a Lomo Biolam microscope, putting one back in can help with the following problems:
- when the image is too milky, slightly soft and low in contrast. This may be caused by exactly that: too wide a beam reaching the prism. Note: the cause may also be eyepieces with too high a magnification
- when flares, reflections or overly bright areas show up in the image, especially in its centre. The cause may be light bouncing off the bare aluminium mount (the dovetail). The black glare stop covers precisely a part of that metal element.

Note: the newest microscopes of this class, especially those built after 1990 (later examples of the Lomo Micmed-1 as well as Bresser Biolam and Lomo Biolam with illumination built into the base), have a monocular head with an angular inclined tube. All older microscopes of this class have a head with a hemispherical inclined tube. The plastic glare stop offered here fits this ROUND version of the head (see the last photo in the gallery). The newer, angular heads do not have it.

So that you can tell exactly which version of the monocular head this black insert fits, the last two photos in the gallery show:

Why should every microscope user own more than one objective nosepiece?

LOMO microscopes - the older silver and black models as much as the newer grey and the newest white ones - have an interchangeable objective nosepiece. That is an excellent arrangement, because it lets you keep whole sets of objectives ready and swap them in seconds.

You can, for example, have separate nosepieces with the objectives already screwed in:
- a set of low-magnification objectives for macro observation with side illumination, without a cover glass (for example 2.5x / 3.2x / 5x / 8x)
- a set of phase contrast objectives (marked Ф or Ф-2)
- a set of objectives for work with water immersion (marked ВИ)
- a set of objectives that all work with oil immersion (marked МИ)
- a set of apochromatic objectives for better colours (marked АПО or АПОХР.)
- a set of objectives for polarisation (marked П)
- a set of objectives with high magnifications only, for example to analyse the ornamentation of the cell wall (50x / 63x / 80x / 100x)
- a set for dark field work (objectives with an iris diaphragm inside)
- a set of objectives for work without a cover glass, even at high magnifications (marked Д=0)
- a set of objectives for fluorescence (marked Л)

A single microscope can then serve several purposes, without screwing every objective in and out by hand each time.

Several different names are in use for this part. They all mean the same thing, among them:
- revolving nosepiece
- objective turret
- objective nosepiece
- nosepiece turret
- objective changer

In the last photo in the gallery you will see the LOMO Biolam R-1 microscope, with an arrow showing which part is meant and where it is located on the microscope. That makes it possible to identify it without any doubt.

A reminder: this nosepiece is partly painted grey. LOMO also made such nosepieces in black (for the older microscopes, for example MBI-1, MBP-3, MBB-1A - that is, before the Biolam era) and in white (for the newer Biolam models after the collapse of the USSR, and for the newest ones sold under the Bresser brand). They are all mechanically identical and compatible, so for example a black nosepiece from a Lomo MBB-1A or MBP-3 can be used on a Lomo Biolam and the other way round - grey or white nosepieces from new Lomo Biolam microscopes can be fitted to black Lomo MBB-1A microscopes and even to the oldest, hammered-silver MBI-1.

Features and dimensions of this mirror:
Mirror type: double-sided, one side plane, the other concave
Diameter: 51 mm including the housing, so it is what is called a 50 mm mirror
Thickness: 7.5 mm
Mounting on the microscope: pushed into a matching hole, horizontally under the stage or vertically in the base of the microscope
Diameter of the mounting pin: 4 mm (+/- 0.3 mm, because the pin is slotted inside and can be expanded / squeezed)
Material: glass mirror with a silver reflective layer under the glass
Housing: mirror in a silver-coloured metal ring
Holder: the round mirror in its housing sits in a black metal holder with a mounting pin

Such mirrors, with the housing and the holder made entirely of metal, are widely used to replace missing parts in many older microscopes during restoration - regardless of the manufacturer and the model of the microscope.

An interesting detail is that microscope mirrors - or rather their concave side - are very often sought after by women for small cosmetic tasks, especially on the face. The concave side magnifies everything considerably, which makes these mirrors useful for, among other things:
- treating small skin blemishes
- removing fine hairs
- grooming the eyebrows

Please note: PLI is a series of projection eyepieces assigned to the CFI60 system (optics corrected for infinity / "I" as in "infinity"). I have, however, personally seen eyepieces from this series used on microscopes with optics corrected for a finite tube length (160 mm, to be precise).

This eyepiece contains no chromatic correction lenses, so that correction has to be built into the objective (in the case of Nikon objectives these are the CF / CFN / CFI series).

The standard 23.2 mm mounting diameter allows it to be used in the projection tubes of many microscopes from various manufacturers - both biological and stereo ones. A very important note: two phase rings inside an objective bring to mind variable phase contrast (PhZ at PZO or PhV at Carl Zeiss Jena). With LOMO, however, this is rather something like a "second type of positive phase contrast". LOMO states in the manual (https://laboratorium.dp.ua/item/68) that one image is obtained when light passes through both rings (with the condenser iris diaphragm open) - and a different one when the diaphragm is closed far enough that light no longer reaches the outer, wide ring and only the inner ring works. The manufacturer recommends viewing the specimen in both modes, because together they give a more reliable idea of its structure. The contrast stays positive (thicker or denser parts of the specimen appear darker against a bright background), and both modes differ from work with the single-ring "Ф" objectives and the LOMO KF-4 condenser (ЛОМО KФ-4), where both the objective and the condenser diaphragm have only one ring. First, a continuous change of the image scale - the longer the tube, the larger the image falling on the sensor or the film, so the framing can be adjusted without changing the objective. Second, and more importantly, the ability to work with objectives computed for different optical tube lengths: 160, 170, 180, 190 and 200 mm.
