Why are dual names Wild and Leica used? The M400 macroscope was manufactured by Wild Heerbrugg (Switzerland). Mechanically, this module is located between the holder to which the microscope stage is attached and the main focusing block with the focusing knobs. Thanks to this, it transfers the rotational movement of the fine focus control into the vertical movement of the microscope stage.

It is worth noting that in the Wild Heerbrugg M20 microscope this mechanism is based on two planes moving on linear guides with bearing balls, rather than on a gear system as used in most microscopes. However, the method of lifting the entire mechanism using a pin is similar to that found in microscopes such as the Lomo MBI-1 or Carl Zeiss Jena Lg.

This is a microscope element placed in the microscope base. It transmits the light beam from the illuminator, unifies it (blurs the filament image using a diffuser), and then properly focuses it using a collimating lens. The light beam prepared in this way then hits an angular mirror (this is a separate element).

This microscope part is known on the secondary market among DIY enthusiasts creating their own optics projects and is frequently used by them.

Important: this element is not used in the Jenamed Histology model. In this microscope version, a flip-out type condenser is used, and instead of the wide-field lens there is a polarizer. In other words - this element does not fit the Carl Zeiss Jena Jenamed Histology microscope.

This lens enables uniform illumination of the specimen when working with low magnification objectives. It is most commonly used with 3.2x and 5x objectives. It is an element installed in the microscope base and is part of the transmitted light illumination system.

Mechanically, this lens has a pin that extends outside the housing so that the user can insert or remove the lens from the optical path. It is mounted below the condenser aperture diaphragm. In Jenamed microscopes, the condenser, the aperture diaphragm, and this wide-field lens are all separate modules.

Metal cast or injection-moulded microscope parts manufactured by Carl Zeiss Jena carry their own part numbers. This condenser module bears number 2711-1 (full marking: Si10 CZ 2711-1).

Tightening the outer element compresses the tapered section of the bushing, causing the slotted bushing to contract at the slit. allowing precise movement of the specimen in both the X and Y axes of the stage plane. The manipulator consists of two coaxial knobs, two independent drive shafts and the fixing elements that attach it to the stage mechanism.

This particular manipulator was removed from a Leitz Dialux microscope. The last photograph in the gallery shows the entire microscope stage from which it was dismounted. The manufacturer also used the same or very similar stages in many other Leitz Wetzlar microscope models, which is why the manipulator may also be compatible with other models from this company.

On the second-hand market and in service documentation one encounters many names referring to this assembly. The most commonly used terms include, among others:
- stage manipulator
- XY stage manipulator
- mechanical stage drive

- specimen mover

Such manipulators very often suffer mechanical damage during transport of the microscope. Because they protrude beyond the outline of the stand, it is precisely they that absorb the impact energy first - in the event of a fall or improper packaging of the instrument.

In many cases it is not the entire manipulator that is damaged, but only one of its components. Most often these are the knobs, the drive shafts, the coaxial sleeves or the fixing elements. For this reason, this database also contains all the most important constituent parts of this (and other) manipulators, offered separately as service elements.

Damage to the manipulator does not make further work with the microscope impossible. The specimen can be moved by hand, or a simple specimen holder without an XY movement mechanism can be fitted. Such a solution works well at low magnifications; however, when working with objectives of magnifications greater than 40x (e.g. 60x, 63x, 80x or 100x), precise manual movement of the specimen becomes very difficult. At total magnifications exceeding about 400x, even a slight movement of the hand shifts the image by a considerable distance within the field of view. The mechanical manipulator enables very smooth, controlled and repeatable movement of the specimen in both axes, which is particularly important during observation with oil immersion and when producing photographic documentation.

1. It fastens the stage to the stage holder - that is, indirectly to the microscope stand. This ring has a groove for the spring screw mounted centrally in that holder, as well as two cut-outs at the sides - for the centring screws. It is not, however, a dovetail - in Carl Zeiss Jena L-Stativ microscopes the stage is mounted on a wide ring.
2. Since it is a sliding ring, it is precisely this part that makes it possible to rotate the stage all the way around, even though this is not a polarizing stage.

This is a service part for the repair of a stage in which exactly this element has been damaged. It is not a complete microscope stage.

This ring contains a screw that makes it possible to lock the position, that is, to press the ring tight so that it does not rotate. This screw very often bends completely (for example during transport) or even breaks off. The prepared light beam then passes through another lens before reaching the right-angle mirror (sold as a separate component).

This part is well known on the secondary market among hobbyists and engineers building their own DIY optical projects, where it is frequently reused.

Interestingly, microscope versions intended exclusively for reflected-light operation (for example, the basic versions of the Carl Zeiss Jena Jenavert) do not contain this component because they do not have a transmitted-light optical path. Such manipulators very often suffer mechanical damage during transport of the microscope. Because they protrude beyond the outline of the stand, it is precisely they that absorb the impact energy first - in the event of a fall or improper packaging of the instrument.

Damage to the manipulator does not make further work with the microscope impossible. The specimen can be moved by hand, or a simple specimen holder without an XY movement mechanism can be fitted. Such a solution works well at low magnifications; however, when working with objectives of magnifications greater than 40x (e.g. 60x, 63x, 80x or 100x), precise manual movement of the specimen becomes very difficult. At total magnifications exceeding about 400x, even a slight movement of the hand shifts the image by a considerable distance within the field of view. Each prism sits in its matching cradle (holder) made of cast metal. The manufacturer calls this holder a "prism seat". Offered here is the holder (seat) for the left inclining prism.

Replacing this inclining prism holder in the stereo head of the Nikon SMZ-10 microscope can help when the metal cradle holding the prism is broken. The cradle is made of a relatively brittle alloy and such damage is unfortunately not uncommon.

At the back of the head there is a switch that selects whether the image from the right or from the left optical path is sent to the trinocular output. On the outside this is done by a short knob. It shifts the set of mirrors sitting inside the head. This complete module is what is offered here.

This is an element exposed to many kinds of damage:
- the knob can get lost after unscrewing
- the knob can break off
- the mirrors can come loose from the metal frame they are glued to, and then they crack or chip easily
- the reflective surface of the mirrors can oxidise

In that case the best solution is to replace the whole module and in this way regain the ability to take photos with the stereo microscope.

It is quite possible that Olympus, like many other manufacturers, used the same diaphragm blades in most microscope condensers of that era, for example:

Damaged iris diaphragm blades are one of the more common faults in microscopes. It usually happens when:
- the grease in the mechanism that opens and closes the diaphragm has dried out and the user tries to force it
- a foreign body gets between the blades (for example a chip of glass from a broken slide)
- the diaphragm is closed too quickly or opened too far

In the BH2-SC / U-SC condensers the iris diaphragm sits inside the condenser housing, it is not a separate part screwed on underneath. It follows that if the iris diaphragm fails you can:
- leave the damaged diaphragm in place and not use the condenser to its full potential
- replace the whole condenser
- repair the diaphragm by replacing the damaged blades

SC microscope condensers have an upper, swing-out lens. When it is in the light path, the condenser offers N.A. 0.9. With the top lens swung out, the condenser works at a low numerical aperture of N.A. 0.16 (values from 0.16 to 0.2 are quoted on the internet). In fact such a low N.A. is achieved with the iris diaphragm alone, without any lens at all - but in these condensers Olympus fitted a protective glass (a round glass disc) protecting the diaphragm from dirt that could fall into it from above (for example from the stage) and damage it. This glass is cemented into the conical casting that forms the condenser body.

It is exactly this part that I offer here, that is the protective glass (the so-called zero glass) cemented into its housing.

This particular part was removed from an Olympus BH2-SC condenser taken out of an Olympus BH-2 BHS microscope.

I could not confirm this, but everything indicates that this protective glass will also fit the microscope condensers for Olympus BX microscopes:
- Olympus U-SC
- Olympus U-SC-2
- Olympus U-SC3

The microscope condensers listed above are sometimes referred to collectively as:
- Olympus Achromat 0.9 flip-out condenser
- Olympus 0.9 swing-out condenser

Before you decide to use this glass with its housing to repair a condenser other than the one it was removed from - compare their appearance and dimensions carefully.

This glass is damaged quite often:
- it can get scratched during cleaning
- it can crack due to stress
- it can get broken during unprotected storage or in transit

The glass protecting the diaphragm is not a spare part for a microscope. It is a part for repairing the condenser - and that condenser can sit in various microscopes.

Here are examples of microscope models in which the condensers that this glass fits are most often used:
- Olympus BH-2: BHS / BHT / BHTU

A curiosity: it is possible that this part also fits the Meiji MA976 microscope condenser.

condensers have an upper, swing-out lens. When it is in the light path, the condenser offers N.A. 0.9. With the top lens swung out, the condenser works at a low numerical aperture of N.A. 0.16 (values from 0.16 to 0.2 are quoted on the internet). It is exactly this arm that does the swinging, and it is what I offer here: it holds the top lens in its mount above the condenser body and at the same time lets you swing it out of the light path.

In the BH2-SC / U-SC condensers this arm with its mount is a single casting together with the lever the user grips. The whole part is fastened to the condenser housing with a single screw (included). The lens sits in the mount without a thread and is clamped by three screws - you can see it and read its description here: https://www.microscopeparts.eu/part/99924.

The inner diameter of the mount is 23 mm.

Please note: originally there was a rubber sleeve on the small lever, which you grip with your fingers, so that the grip is firmer and the fingers do not slip. It is missing here - it must have been lost somewhere during use. It is a removable, replaceable item. If you have a damaged arm in an old condenser and you are looking for a replacement - do not throw away your old rubber, you can move it over without any trouble.

The working position of the whole arm with the top lens is set by a pair of stops - the small screw on the arm rests against the screw in the body. Thanks to this the lens locks in the same place every time it comes back and does not have to be centred again each time.

What goes wrong in this mechanism? Here is an example list of problems that can be solved by replacing the arm:
- the arm wobbles on its axis when the pivot screw is loose or worn
- the lens stops returning to its place when the stop screw has been unscrewed or lost, for example during cleaning
- the lens mount gets damaged when someone tries to force the lens out without undoing the three screws
- the casting cracks when the condenser is dropped - the arm sticks out beyond the outline and takes the impact first

This arm is not a spare part for a microscope. It is a part for repairing or rebuilding the condenser - and that condenser can sit in various microscopes.

When replacing the arm with another one, bear in mind that the stop for the working position sits on the arm itself. A new arm will most probably have to be readjusted with that one screw until the lens sets itself exactly on the axis of the light path.

When the arm is swung out, there is no optics left above the iris diaphragm - only the protective glass cemented into the body remains (https://www.microscopeparts.eu/part/99926). It is what then protects the diaphragm blades (https://www.microscopeparts.eu/part/99927) from dirt falling from the stage.

- aluminium clamping sleeve, split along its whole length, which is inserted into the hole in the mounting block of the head holder
- screw with a three-lobe knob, driven in from the outside

This clamping sleeve comes from the head holder for the Nissho Optical 209 microscope (the complete holder is available here https://www.microscopeparts.eu/part/91077).

It is very likely that Nissho Optical (NSK for short) uses identical sleeves across the whole series of stereo microscope head holders it manufactured.

Without this part the holder with the stereo microscope head cannot be clamped precisely at a given height on the stand.

The last photo in the gallery shows the measurement of the pillar that the stereo microscope head holder is fitted onto, and in which this clamping sleeve belongs. The pillar has an unusual diameter - 24 mm - and this matters to anyone who would like to use the sleeve in other microscopes.

P/N 45 09 05 (also written as 450905). However, it also fits the following variants:
- Zeiss Axiolab drb KT, which carries the same number 45 09 05 (450905)
- Zeiss Axiolab E re, 45 09 07 (450907)
- Zeiss Axiolab A (reflected light), 45 09 09 (450909)
- Zeiss Axiolab Pol, 45 09 10 (450910)

The knob carries a collar with a 0-360 scale, which is an angular measure describing one full turn of the knob.

The knob is mounted on the shaft (the shaft inside the stand body that connects the knobs on the right and the left side of the microscope) with a small grub screw, which is included.

I was not able to confirm this, but in my opinion it is very likely that this knob also fits the following microscopes:
- Zeiss Standard 20
- Zeiss Standard 25 ICS
- Zeiss Axiostar
- Zeiss Axioskop 20
- Zeiss Axiovert 25

The Carl Zeiss Axiolab microscope has two such knobs. Both are identical, so there is no difference between the right and the left knob. I am offering each of these knobs separately (one at a time).

Purpose: brightness control of the 6V 20W-25W and 30W halogen bulb. This potentiometer has to work together with the electronics of the transformer built into the microscope body.

This potentiometer was removed from a Zeiss Axiolab re microscope, P/N 45 09 05 (also written as 450905). However, it also fits the following variants:
- Zeiss Axiolab drb KT, which carries the same number 45 09 05 (450905)
- Zeiss Axiolab E re, 45 09 07 (450907)
- Zeiss Axiolab A, 45 09 09 (450909)
- Zeiss Axiolab Pol, 45 09 10 (450910)

I was not able to confirm this, but in my opinion it is very likely that the potentiometer from the Zeiss Axiolab microscope also fits the following microscopes:
- Zeiss Standard 20
- Zeiss Standard 25 ICS
- Zeiss Axiostar
- Zeiss Axioskop 20
- Zeiss Axiovert 25

The part offered here can be a remedy for the following problems with a Zeiss microscope:
- if the illumination intensity control in the microscope has stopped working completely (but be careful, the cause may also lie on the side of the electronics)
- if the bulb flickers while you adjust the brightness
- if, for example, due to mechanical damage the knob has broken off your potentiometer
