microscopes, the intermediate tube (https://www.microscopeparts.eu/part/99571) contains a horizontally mounted barrel with a prism that splits the light towards the trinocular/photo port. The individual positions are switched by pulling and pushing the control knob (https://www.microscopeparts.eu/part/91040). The Amici-Bertrand lens, used for aligning DIC and the phase contrast rings, is mounted in the same place - and that is the lens presented here.

Why is this lens located in the light-splitting module, even though the PH marking is on the turret of the Optovar magnification changer? The reason is simple: the first Zeiss Universal models had no magnification changer, so the Amici-Bertrand lens was mounted next to the beam splitting prism and is swung in with the same knob that switches the photo mode. When the magnification changer (with the 1.25x / 1.6x and 2x positions) was added to the newer models, a PH position was provided on the changer as well, containing no lens at all (an empty slot) - because the Bertrand lens for phase contrast stayed where it had always been. This nosepiece holder is identical in intermediate tubes without a magnification changer and in those with an Optovar.

This is exactly the part offered here - the holder used to attach the nosepiece to the intermediate tube.

This nosepiece holder includes:
- a male dovetail for mounting the nosepiece
- a clamping screw that locks the nosepiece in place once fitted
- an empty slot for an optional narrow slider
- two blanking covers for this slot
- an empty slot for a wide filter slider

This holder fits the intermediate tubes used in the following microscopes:

Photomicroscope microscopes.

In the base of Zeiss Universal / Zeiss Photomicroscope class microscopes there is a set of lenses that collimate the light beam. Together they form the collector of the Köhler illumination, even though they are not mechanically connected to each other.

Here I present a module consisting of:
- the second collector lens in the light path
- the heat filter (heat absorbing KG filter)
- the metal mount holding these two glass elements
- the screws used to fasten this mount with the lens and filter to the microscope base

without lenses used for? When working with low power objectives (roughly up to 10x - 12.5x), a better image is obtained
- either without any condenser
- or with an iris diaphragm only
- or with a special condenser of very low numerical aperture N.A.
This solution is very often used in inverted biological microscopes - and that is exactly how the condenser shown here was used.

If this were a complete condenser with optics (which it is not), the Zeiss microscope condenser P/N 465267 (also written as 46 52 67) could be fitted with N.A. 0.32 top lenses, with DIC or polarization top lenses N.A. Apl. 0.63, or with others, because the top lens is an interchangeable element screwed into the condenser housing.

The item shown here can be described as:
- a Zeiss condenser housing
- a Zeiss iris diaphragm in a housing
- also (although not correctly) a condenser with N.A. of about 0.20
However, since this is not a damaged item, it has the thread into which a condenser top lens can be screwed.

In Carl Zeiss microscopes of the Standard series (except the Standard Junior school model), the condenser is not mounted in a round holder. It has a ring-shaped dovetail that slides into the dovetail guide of the condenser carrier.

The last photo in the gallery shows the Carl Zeiss ICM 405 inverted microscope, with an arrow indicating exactly where this particular condenser was mounted.

The Zeiss 465267 condenser has a mount in the form of a dovetail ring. This mounting interface is used, among others (this is not a complete list), in the following microscope models:

The mounting ring of the condenser shown here has a diameter of 41.6 mm. The ring also has a factory-made conical notch that fits the locking pin fixing the position of the condenser. This pin is located in the condenser carrier.

Note on the mounting diameter: over nearly 50 years of production of microscopes of this series, the dovetail diameter was always about 42 mm - but it was not perfectly constant. Depending on the year of production, the material (plastic, aluminium, brass) and the type of condenser (classic Abbe or phase contrast turret condenser), it can range from slightly above 41 mm to almost 43 mm. Such a large tolerance results from the design of the condenser carrier: it has return springs, a locking pin and clamping / centering screws. Thanks to this, condensers with a mounting ring diameter of 41 to 43 mm can almost always be mounted stably.

microscope head mount.

This lens was removed from a Carl Zeiss ICM 405 microscope. Note that the database also contains a Telan lens removed from the twin model, the Carl Zeiss IM 35 (here: https://www.microscopeparts.eu/part/99301). The dimensions, the function it performs and my knowledge of the design of both microscope models lead me to believe that both lenses are identical - but since they were physically removed from two different microscope models, they are listed separately in the database.

The Zeiss IM 35 and Zeiss ICM 405 microscopes were also sold under the Opton brand.

Commonly used, cheap cover glasses are 0.17 mm thick mostly on paper. Even the standard for class #1.5 allows a range of 0.16-0.19 mm, and cheap Chinese cover glasses in practice come in anywhere from approx. 0.13 to 0.25 mm, often not matching the thickness stated on the box. Only #1.5H (high precision) cover glasses have a guaranteed thickness of 0.170 mm with a tolerance of +/- 0.005 mm. With high-aperture dry objectives such as this Apochromat 50x/0.95, variation in cover glass thickness noticeably reduces image contrast and resolution (spherical aberration). The correction collar fitted to this objective lets you adjust the optics to the combined thickness of the cover glass and the mounting medium layer beneath it, within a range of 0.12 mm to 0.22 mm. This compensates for most of the variation encountered in practice.

Because of their very high quality they are often used on microscopes from other manufacturers as well, especially when Carl Zeiss Jena Planachromat objectives are mounted in them. The "compatibility" section lists a long series of microscopes these eyepieces fit - but that list is definitely not complete.

Important: these eyepieces work both on microscopes with a finite tube length (160 mm, for example) and on microscopes with infinity optics. That means you can use them on the Carl Zeiss Jena Amplival microscope just as well as on the Carl Zeiss Jena NU-2 microscope.

A note - eyepieces with such a strong magnification are in my opinion better suited to a quick look than to permanent work. I write "in my opinion" on purpose, because this comes from using them and not from the manufacturer's description.
A 16x eyepiece magnification should be treated as a zoom that brings out no additional detail (the resolution is not increased). This matters for example with heads that have their own extra magnification (such as Carl Zeiss Jena heads with a built-in 1.5x or 1.6x factor) - working with a 100x oil immersion objective you then theoretically get 100*1.5*16 = 2400x, while physics does not allow light from the visible range to be usefully magnified for the human eye beyond roughly 1250x - so this is what is called empty magnification.

Gleitfett grades differ in their parameters.

Gleitfett I E10 and Gleitfett II E75 were supplied with the Carl Zeiss Jena micromanipulator.
The Gleitfett III E410 offered here was supplied with the Carl Zeiss Jena Neophot-21 microscope.

This MAY suggest (although I have no proof in the form of manufacturer documentation) that the lower numbers (I and II) and the lower values of the "E" parameter (E10 and E75) were intended for finer mechanisms - and may therefore have a lower viscosity, for example. The III E410 grease, with its high "E" value, was supplied with a heavy microscope built around massive mechanics - so it may well be thicker.

This grease can of course be used on microscopes from other manufacturers as well - a few are listed in the "compatibility" section, but that is by no means a complete list.

Since the adapter has an empty barrel with an internal diameter of 23.2 mm on the output side, a projection eyepiece of that diameter can be placed in it, or a so-called "USB eyepiece", that is a digital microscope camera. - the output in the trinocular tubes of the Carl Zeiss Jena Jenamed, Jenaval, Jenalumar, Jenatech, Jenavert, Jenapol microscopes
- the LOMO TRN-1 heads (ЛОМО ТРН-1), found in the LOMO Polam microscopes

- in Carl Zeiss Jena Nf and Lumipan microscopes, CZJ M19 objectives are used together with the EPI illuminator and can then work both in bright field and in dark field
- in Carl Zeiss Jena Polmi-A microscopes, CZJ M19 objectives can be used, but they give a magnification other than the nominal one

This is a filter that combines the functions of a blue filter and a ground glass diffuser:
- the blue filter is used to convert the yellow, warm light of the bulb into light closer to white light

This is not the plate for the base of Zeiss Photomicroscope microscopes. Although it looks similar - it is not the plate for the body of the Zeiss Stereomicroscope either.

This plate has two pins on its inner side. The photo intermediate tube should have two holes into which these pins are pressed. For a firmer hold you can apply some glue to the underside of the plate.

In one of the last photos in the gallery you will see two photo-trino intermediate tubes lying side by side. As you can see, this plate is not fitted at the factory on every variant of the intermediate tube.
- I have not come across it (and I have seen no mounting holes) on the black intermediate tubes of the earliest Carl Zeiss Universal, Ultraphot and Photomicroscope models
- on the latest variants of the Photomicroscope III the logo is printed on the base (instead of a plate) and there is no plate on the intermediate tube

Importantly - intermediate tubes can be swapped between models of this class, so the surest way to tell whether this plate fits a particular tube is to check whether it has mounting holes.

Over the years this plate often fell off or was torn off, so on the second-hand market you can find microscopes with this element missing.

Some users like this style of the older models and, after cutting off the two mounting pins, they glue the plate onto a photo intermediate tube that has no mounting holes.

Phase contrast objectives for the Neophot microscopes have a phase ring built differently from the other Ph objectives made by Carl Zeiss Jena - instead of a continuous ring there is a three-segment pattern, somewhat reminiscent of a Wankel engine rotor. This is worth knowing, because it means that a phase contrast objective from a biological microscope will not replace this one in a Neophot, and the other way round.

The reason is a matter of design. In a metallurgical microscope the objective also acts as the condenser, so the illuminating light passes through the same pupil as the light forming the image. With a continuous ring the whole illumination would pass through the phase coating, which lets only part of the light through and reflects a fair amount of it - and those reflections would swamp the already faint phase contrast image. The solution turned out to be an odd number of segments: the image of the diaphragm formed after reflection off the specimen is rotated by 180 degrees, so with three segments it falls into the gaps between them. I have not found any documentation confirming my assumption, but most probably this objective also fits the models:
- Carl Zeiss Slit Lamp 20 SL

Important: it is widely but wrongly believed that these slit lamp models have a built-in objective with a magnification changer. That magnification changer is not an objective. It is a Galilean lens system, while the objective itself screws onto a thread underneath the body of this microscope.

A note on the mounting thread diameter: this f=125 objective has a mounting thread of 47 mm diameter. Slit lamps are not surgical microscopes, even though they are sometimes - incorrectly - called Zeiss OPMI f=125. The early models of the Zeiss OPMI surgical microscopes have objectives with a mounting thread of 48 mm diameter. This single millimetre of difference is why objectives from these two kinds of microscopes are often confused, especially as they can almost be screwed into a female thread 1 mm larger or smaller in diameter.

This is an interesting variant of the logo plate. The square logo, introduced at the end of the 1970s, carried the lettering "West Germany" in its second line. The plate shown here does not have that lettering. It may well be a version produced after German reunification (1990) and before the new version of the logotype was introduced (1993/94).

Since the adhesive used to attach these plates to the microscope body loses its properties over the years, these plates sometimes fall off. Sometimes they are also deliberately prised out. Such a plate lets you bring your microscope back to its factory appearance using original parts.

The cable was tested before being removed from a working microscope. The plug is fully functional, its plastic housing is neither broken nor crumbled, and all contacts are straight. Attaching / soldering on the base side has to be taken care of on your own.

A new plug of this type can be bought today. It is the DIN 41622 standard, a two row arrangement of 3.0 x 1 mm blade contacts, 12 poles - produced continuously for decades and offered today by Telegärtner, Binder, MPE and EVG among others. At Telegärtner the 12 pole male connector carries the number 100023261, and the matching female connector the number 100023250. One has to keep in mind, however, that this is only the contact insert itself: the cable housing (metal or plastic) together with the mounting trough is bought separately, the guide pins that also serve as coding are bought separately, the cable of the right cross section is bought separately, and all twelve contacts have to be soldered. Some users will appreciate owning an original cable with a period plug whose coding matches their microscope, while others will be glad that I have given the designations of the new equivalents and can go their own way.

This is one of two cables coming out of the base of the Zeiss Photomicroscope III microscope. The following cables come out of it:
- with a 12 pin plug (2x6)
- with a 22 pin plug (2x10 + 2)

The cable presented here ends with a 22 pin plug, that is 10 rows of two flat contacts each plus two single contacts in the middle. In the Zeiss manual the matching socket on the power supply is described as a 22 pole socket for the supply voltages of the automatic exposure control. There is no standard designation on the plug - only the marking "Siemens" and the letter "R" are visible.

The cable was tested before being removed from a working microscope. The plug is fully functional, its plastic housing is neither broken nor crumbled, and all contacts are straight. Attaching / soldering on the base side has to be taken care of on your own.

A condenser with such a low numerical aperture is intended for observation with low magnification microscope objectives (1.25x / 3.2x / 6.3x, 10x at most).

- The screws set the position of the ring, and the condenser simply screws into that ring.
- Further down, in the same carrier, sits the iris diaphragm for this main condenser. It is centrable as well and has its own screws for that.

This condenser can also be screwed into the carrier of Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar microscopes - it is the same carrier as in Jenaval microscopes. Note, however, that Jenalumar microscopes run the Apl. 0.9 condenser from the factory, that is the aplanatic version without achromatic correction.

The Achr. apl. 0.9 condenser is the working condenser of these microscopes - it covers the whole range of dry objectives, but with immersion objectives it works without making use of their full aperture.

The so-called "small illuminators", that is the halogen 25W one (like this: https://www.microscopeparts.eu/gallery/99693) or the HBO 50W, are held by two such screws. Large HBO 250W illuminators with an integrated power supply are mounted on 4 such screws.

If your microscope has only one small illuminator (for example a Jenaval with transmitted light or a Jenavert with EPI illumination), you can extend it with a second (also small) illuminator. You will then need two screws for that.

What is unusual (and sometimes the reason why a user cannot find these screws for a long time) is that they are unscrewed FROM THE FRONT of the microscope. The heads of these screws sit in openings cut into the white sheet-metal side covers of the microscope. This is a black tube with an upper element (barrel) 55 mm long. Here (https://www.microscopeparts.eu/gallery/91057) you can see a functionally identical adapter, but grey and with an upper barrel only 25 mm long.

Black adapters of this kind come from the era of the Carl Zeiss Jena L stands (models Carl Zeiss Jena Lg, Lumipan, Ng, Nf or Nu). The grey ones are newer, from the era of the Mikroval series (models Carl Zeiss Jena Laboval, Eduval, Ergaval or Amplival and Docuval).

The mounting fit is of course identical, so both can be used interchangeably.

Because on the output side this adapter has an empty barrel with an inner diameter of 23.2 mm, you can place in it a projection eyepiece of that diameter or a so-called USB eyepiece, that is a digital microscope camera. Such a tube can be mounted directly on the microscope stand, in place of the head. A seat for a ring dovetail of 41.0 - 41.5 mm diameter is found among others in the microscopes:

- the LOMO TRN-1 heads (ЛОМО ТРН-1), found in LOMO Polam microscopes

This is not a tube for one particular microscope model. A trinocular head can be mounted not only on the microscope it was sold with, so the correct assumption is that this is a universal tube with a ring dovetail of 41.5 mm diameter on one side and a barrel of 23.2 mm diameter on the other.

This is the housing of the head, not the housing of the microscope. The 452143 head itself fits directly on the Carl Zeiss Axioplan 2, Axioplan 2 imaging and Axiophot 2 microscopes, and with the 452969 adapter it is also used on Axioskop 2 stands. This part therefore fits every 452143 head, regardless of which microscope that head is working on.

ATTENTION: This is a board for a microscope branded by Zeiss (Oberkochen, West Germany). The board, however, carries the "Carl Zeiss Jena" logo. This is not a mistake - this board was made in week 31 of 1997, already after the German reunification, when the Jena plant was producing for the entire Carl Zeiss group.

IMPORTANT: in the photo you can see that in every pin block onto which a connector is plugged, one pin is missing. This is not damage, this is not a broken-off pin - this is the original factory condition. It is supposed to look like this.

The plastic this eyepiece housing is made of can be damaged in various ways. The g at the end of the designation stands for the German gehärtet, meaning toughened. The manufacturer gave it to filters meant to work right next to high-power lamps, especially HBO mercury burners, where ordinary glass does not withstand the high temperature. With a UV excitation filter this matters especially, because it sits at the hottest point of the whole path and absorbs most of the burner energy.

Filters 32 mm in diameter can be used in most microscopes from many manufacturers. In Carl Zeiss Jena microscopes they can be used, among others, in the following fluorescence microscopes:
- Carl Zeiss Jena Jenamed Fluorescence (Fluoreszenz)
- Carl Zeiss Jena Jenalumar
- Carl Zeiss Jena Fluoval / Fluoval-2
- Carl Zeiss Jena Laboval Fluorescence

The manufacturer catalogue gives the following transmission values for this glass at 2 mm thickness:
- 0.015 at 302 nm
- 0.093 at 312 nm
- 0.435 at 334 nm
- 0.644 at 366 nm

Across the whole visible range, from 405 to 644 nm, transmission is zero. This means the filter works almost entirely on the 366 nm mercury line, exactly where the HBO burner is strongest in the ultraviolet.

One property of this glass is worth knowing: above 700 nm it starts to transmit again, and at 750 nm transmission reaches 0.210. This infrared leak is invisible to the eye, but it heats the specimen and spoils contrast in photographs.

In the excitation path U204 is also combined with a red-absorbing filter. The manufacturer documentation shows such a pair with the B226 filter, which cleans up the excitation band further.

The same UG 1 glass was supplied in two thicknesses, each with its own designation:
- The Carl Zeiss Jena U204 filter is UG 1 glass 2 mm thick
- The Carl Zeiss Jena U205 filter is UG 1 glass 4 mm thick

The thicker U205 cuts more sharply, but passes about a third less energy on the 366 nm line, so the image is noticeably darker.

A safety note: this filter passes ultraviolet, which is invisible and harmful to the eyes. When working with it, never look into the illumination path without a barrier filter in place.

objectives are corrected for infinity, so an intermediate optic in the form of a tube lens is required to create the intermediate image. In this case it has to be a lens of the Zeiss ICS system with a focal length of 164.5 mm.

In this series of inverted microscopes the tube lens sits below the nosepiece. The last photos in the gallery show the stand of the Carl Zeiss Axiovert 100M microscope, with an arrow pointing to the exact place where this lens is located. This allows you to identify the part without any doubt.

According to the manufacturer this is not a part intended to be replaced by the user, so there is no catalogue number either on the lens mount or on the aluminium profile into which this lens is screwed.

I was not able to confirm it, but it is possible that this ICS tube lens also fits the inverted microscopes Zeiss Axiovert 135 / 135M. Before you decide to use it in the Axiovert 135 / 135M models, please check this on forums or groups devoted to Zeiss microscopes.

The tube transfers the image from the objectives through the whole stand to the head mount. This part has no counterpart in upright biological microscopes.

There is no catalogue number anywhere on this part. That may suggest the manufacturer did not intend it as a part to be replaced by the user, one that could be ordered from service.

The last photos in the gallery show the stand of the Carl Zeiss Axiovert 100M microscope, with an arrow pointing to the place where this part is located. This allows you to identify it without any doubt.

so additional optics in the form of a tube lens are needed to create the intermediate image. In this case it has to be a lens with a focal length of 180 mm, the same as in the Motic CCIS system - and unlike the Zeiss ICS system (also infinity, used among others in the Axio series microscopes), whose tube lens has a focal length of 164.5 mm.

This lens was removed from the Zeiss 415500-1400-000 binocular head, but it also fits the model with a built-in digital camera and the model with a trino port (phototube). So it fits:
- the Zeiss 415500-1400-000 binocular head
- the Zeiss 415500-1401-000 binocular head with trinocular phototube
- the Zeiss 415500-1402-000 binocular head with built-in digital camera

In the Primostar series the tube lens is placed in the two-part microscope head. This head consists of the angled tube and the eyepiece head screwed onto it. The tube lens sits in the lower part of the tube, at the joint with the microscope body, inside the ring dovetail.

Each of these discs has 5 seats that take filters of 32 mm diameter. The filters are locked in place by a springy retaining ring (a so-called Sprengring) so that they cannot fall out. The set offered here comes with 10 such rings. Since each wheel can be loaded with five filters, the total number of possible combinations is 25.

At the moment these filter seats are empty. Neither wheel has any filters fitted - you are free to load them with whatever filters you like.

This two-wheel module fits halogen, HBO and XBO lamphouses.

Parts made by Carl Zeiss Jena, cast or injection moulded from ZnAl alloy, carry their own numbers by which they can be identified. This double filter revolver module consists of 3 cast components:
- 2672 Si10 CZ - the frame carrying both wheels. It is at the same time the outer cover plate with which the whole module is screwed onto the lamphouse
- 2957 Si10 CZ - the thick filter wheel
- and note: the thin filter wheel also carries the number 2957 Si10 CZ, which is unusual for this manufacturer - that two parts differing in dimensions should share the same number

This double filter wheel is sometimes also called:
- double filter holder
- double filter turret
- dual filter carrier
- double filter slider
- double filter changer

Here https://www.microscopeparts.eu/part/99693 you can see what a complete 6V 25W halogen illuminator looks like with a single filter wheel fitted. The double set offered here fits such an illuminator among others, so the single filter wheel from the illuminator of a Carl Zeiss Jena Jenaval microscope can, for example, be replaced by the double one.

On the black plastic housing the magnification is written as "2,5" - unlike the older versions of such objectives (made for the Stereomikroskop XII model), where the format used was "2 1/2" (see here: https://www.microscopeparts.eu/part/91035)

In stereo microscopes built on the Greenough principle, what is called "the microscope objective" is in fact a pair (two pieces) of objectives set at a specific angle to each other. This is exactly why the housings of older examples of such objectives (more precisely: the common housing covering the pair of objectives) carried two serial numbers. This technical design has a very interesting consequence - each single objective, once taken out of the housing, becomes an interesting choice for anyone working in macro photography, all the more so because these are usually low-magnification objectives, which are exactly what macro photography looks for.

Since the 1930s Carl Zeiss Jena has produced many models and variants of stereo microscopes, and this objective will fit the vast majority of them, because the way they are mounted is the same throughout.

Interestingly, in the instruction manual from 1954 available online (https://www.microscopemuseum.eu/catalogues/Carl_Zeiss_1954_Stereomikroskop_PM_XVI.pdf), the header on page 3 reads "Stereomikroskop PH XVI". I do not know whether this is an OCR error or an original misprint, but it means that this (incorrect) name may be in circulation as well - and all of the names listed above refer to one and the same microscope.

P/N 45 09 05 (also written: 450905). It also fits the following variants:
- Zeiss Axiolab drb KT, which carries the same number 45 09 05 (450905)
- Zeiss Axiolab E re, 45 09 07 (450907)
- Zeiss Axiolab Pol, 45 09 10 (450910)

This is the plate that the transformer electronics are originally screwed to from the inside (if the microscope has them). What I offer here is the plate only - the bare cover - nothing more.

Many people treat the cover plate and the power supply as one single part. So when the power supply burns out, it is usually unscrewed together with the plate - and taken to the repair shop that way. If the power supply cannot be saved, it often never comes back... and unfortunately neither does the body cover.

In that case the options are:
- cut the cover yourself out of cardboard
- print the cover on a 3D printer
- or simply buy an original cover, like the one offered here.
